    Konsole crashes at startup

    Hi,

I have a big problem, I just fired up my computer and Konsole crashes at startup. Also Adept or synaptic crash before I can even type my password. I don't remember doing anything weird the last time I used this computer. I'm kind of stuck now because I can not use a terminal. Anybody any ideas how to solve this I really don't have a clue, else I would provide more info...

    Thanks in advance

    This is true.

I'm far from a master of the shell, aka Command Line Interface, but you can probably fake your way through a recovery the same way the rest of us do. But you're going to have to observe the screen, where the system is trying to tell you what is broken. Hopefully there are errors being written to the screen as it attempts to run the X server, which is the GUI that you are looking for.

So, can you choose "Recovery Mode" from your boot menu? If so, choose that, and when the prompt comes up it will be in Super User mode, and you will type the following:

    Code:
    /etc/init.d/kdm start
and I expect there will be a momentary blink to black, and then a series of errors written on the screen. That's what we need to see.

i tried that, but it just fires up KDM without showing any errors, but still the same problems. Konsole still doesn't work, ALT-F12 doesn't work, can not start programs that require kdesu like adept or synaptic, even konqueror crashes at startup... i'm kind of lost and fear a re-install...

        OK.

        (1) When you log in to that desktop, instead of clicking to start the Konsole, do Alt-F2 and type "konsole" with no quote marks, and see what happens.

        (2) Does Konqueror work? If so, you can use it to browse to the /var/log directory and maybe a review of one of the logs will reveal a problem, especially after you do (1) above and Konsole crashes.

        (3) I'm thinking if I were you, I would be starting my download of the 8.04 ISO file on a different computer.

        Sorry.

          (1) ALT-F2 doesn't work, the input window disappears before I can enter anything.

          (2) Konquerer crashes at startup

          (3) I've been thinking about that, or at least installing 7.10 (don't like to try betas at this point)

          but thanks for your input.

I noticed my HD is pretty full might this problem be caused by lack of disk space?

Yep, it sure could be due to insufficient free space. :P
