LCD resets to 640x480 when x starts?

This has just started happening, all i was doing was browsing a few forums, shut the laptop down and when i came to start it up a few hours later it starts in horrible 640x480 mode at 60Hz - when i try to bump it back up to 1024x768 it just spazzes out and the colours go horrible and it looks like a split screen?

what on earths happened to it?

This happens to me almost in daily basis, I am running Puppy on notebook with 1024x768 plus external 1280x1024 display, it is always that 640x480 come back on external after reboot, gives me a super size virtual desktop I need to scroll around or reset to the correct resolution manually.
