Assign an Image to an Icon?

I have a few icons on my desktop with no image associated with them. Makes the desktop look generic...How can I assign an image to these icons?

    Thanks

Right-click the icon and select Properties. Click the large icon to get to the icon selections.

Thanks but what if I want to make my own icon? What is the max size is should be or does that matter?
