Re: Installed Beryl, Now Kubuntu Will Not Launch After Sign In Screen

Okay, you do have the Nvidia card identified in xorg.conf. But, it may be that it needs some tweaking to get it operating at it's full potential in Linux.

I'm going to ask dibl to review this thread and comment as appropriate. He has experience with Nvidia cards and has posted a How To on using Envy to get things setup properly.

Watch for a response in this thread from him.

OK, I looked up the Vanta card:

      http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._71.86.01.html

So, you need the proprietary driver, ver. 71.86.

I don't know whether the Envy script installer will identify that card correctly or not -- have you tried it? Here's the instruction: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3086232.0

I would try Envy first (if you haven't already). If that doesn't work, you'll have to follow the Nvidia instructions to download and install the proprietary driver -- that's your only hope to run Beryl.

Thanks dibl. I'm sure that mechanism will appreciate the assistance. That's what I really like about this Forum - it's members and their willingness to help others.

Okay - I've got envy-t up and running. The first screen prompts me as follows:

The 'quick and dirty' to get you your cube.

              Click on Desktop (top row)
Click (put a check) into Destop Cube, Fade to Desktop, and Rotate Cube
Click on General Options (top row)
Scroll down to Virtical Virtual Size and ensure it is set to 1
Set Number of Desktops to 4

Click the upper right X to close.

You should have your Beryl ruby icon in your system tray. If it's there, right-click and mouse on Select Window Manager and click Beryl. If all is well, you should see your desktop 'change' meaning Beryl is running. If you move your mouse up to the right top corner of your screen you should see your Beryl desktop become 'flat' with all open windows. Click on any of them to refocus the view. If you put your mouse in the upper right corner 'area' and press both mouse buttons at the same time and hold them, the cube should appear. Keep both mouse buttons down and move the mouse and the cube rotates.

Everything worked until I set the window manager to Beryl. When I did, this output was shown in my console:

I'm going to point you to this previous thread on getting Beryl up and running with an Nvidia driver. The same type errors you are getting were reported. dibl was able to get the member going. You might also be helped by it.

Some Googling found this Beryl How To that may shed light on your problem.

Install Beryl on Ubuntu Feisty with AIGLX for Nvidia: Ubuntu (7.04)

Yeah, that's not a good thing. I'm racking my brain to remember the drill with Beryl.

OK, it sounds like Envy installed your Nvidia driver correctly, so assuming that is the case, open a Konsole window and enter this:
                          Code:
                          sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
This will write a new xorg.conf file that has glx and compositing enabled (I hope). Then, if that works, get back to your console window and enter
                          Code:
                          sudo nvidia-settings
this is the Nvidia driver utility, in Super User mode. Click the "X Server Display Configuration" tab, then click "detect displays", then set your screen resolution as you prefer. I recommend you leave the refresh set to "Auto". When you have the resolution the way you want it, click "Save to X Configuration File" in the lower right, "x" Merge, and click "Save".

Restart the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and log back in.

Now open the console and enter
                          Code:
                          glxgears
and let's see if we get a different result.

                            mrmsudawgs@closet:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
