Installed Beryl, Now Kubuntu Will Not Launch After Sign In Screen

I downloaded Beryl from the repository to further torture myself with software that I really don't understand . Anyway, I rebooted after the download and everything happened as normal except when signing in. I signed in at the Kubuntu screen (the one shown after a reboot) and hit enter but the screen went blank for a moment then returned to the sign in screen. I signed in several times with the same result - always returns to the sign in screen.

I have a hunch as to what the problem might be. I may be running quite low on hard drive space which may be causing me issues. How can I remove the beryl files I installed without launching KDE?

Hopefully, this can be done from the command line prior to signing in. I'm dual booting with Windows XP and 7.04.

    Thanks,

    m

You'll need to get to a CLI, so given your current situation, boot into recovery mode. You'll be at the command line as root.

    Type:
    Code:
    apt-get remove beryl emerald
If you didn't install the emerald package, then omit emerald from the command above.

Bang! Worked like a charm. I then freed up some hard drive space and reinstalled Beryl. Now, if I only new how to turn on those cool effects..

First thing to do, is to check and see if your video card has direct rendering. Open a console shell and type:
        Code:
        glxgears
A small window should open with three colored spinning gears. If you get that, good. Leave it run a while and note the frames per second rates that get listed in the original console. Let it write about 10 lines then press CTRL+C to stop it. Copy and paste the output for review.

I did see the gears although they spun slowly. Here is the output.

That's less than I have. Will see if your card has enough umph to run Beryl.

Did you install the emerald package? You will need it.

Not sure. I downloaded Beryl from the repository so not sure what came with it. However, looking in the KDE menus I have >Settings>Emerald Theme Manager. Is this it?

Yes. So let's see how far you get. Open a console shell and type:
                Code:
                beryl-manager
You should see the beryl icon in the system tray. If you do, right-click it and click on Beryl Settings Manager. If you get that far, will continue.

Ha! Haaaaa! Oh man, that was u-g-l-y. Basically, I followed your steps and my screen went completely white when the manager launched. I was able to use my mouse's wheel to rotate the screen but there was nothing to see. All white. I had to press and hold my power button to reboot.

I do have another video card they may be a little better than this one. I'll install it and give it a try later unless you have another solution of the current card...

As to "press and hold my power button to reboot" that was not necessary, unless you mean the ENTIRE screen. Tip: next time press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart the X server.

Was the ENTIRE screen white, or did you still have access to the panel and the beryl icon?

The entire screen went white. No letters. No text. Nothing. Just white. There was nothing to click on - not even the panel.

What do you think? Install a new card?

As the FPS rate were not very impressive, that's what I'd be thinking of doing. That means of course, you have a desktop PC? Do you know what manufacturer/model of video card you have? If not, from a console shell type:
                        Code:
                        lspci | grep Graphics
                        and copy/paste the results.

Running that command did not return anything. However, I'm sure my card is a 16 MB Nvidia Vanta - which is about six years old now and was purchased new with my computer (desktop pc). It is not a very impressive machine but it runs great with 7.04 as opposed to Win XP.

You should get a lot better performance from that card. Do you know if you are actually using an Nvidia driver?? If you don't know, let's look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. From a console shell type:
                            Code:
                            cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
                            Copy/paste the output.
