can't install java

everytime i try to install l get the following message!

every single time! packages I selected were sun-java5-bin and sun-java5-jre

Are you scrolling down the java license agreement, that is showing in your picture, and checking the box that you agree? If you continue without choosing that you agree the install will probably puke.

Yeah I agree, the error comes up before the agreement screen too, or at least before one of them

I would uninstall whatever java files, from whatever version, you show installed of the jre, bin or java-common files.
If it still won't commit then you will need to do some digging in your preview changes screen and click on the required packages to see if it gives an indication of where the conflict or broken dependency will occur.

I think that this is all that remains of Java on my system? And I get the same error what trying to remove it

I'll direct you to another thread where integr8e helped someone with a partially installed jre showing upgradeable. Since you are showing the java6 package remaining, and you want it installed, try following his suggestion. The two commands he gives tell apt to fix broken dependencies and then dpkg to configure all unconfigured apps. Hopefully you will have a working java install after that. If not post back here.
