    can't load desktop

I upgrade via apt-get and now when I boot up I get the "KUBUNTU" loading logo...but when it tries to give me the login screen, I just get a blank monitor screen.

Can't do anything at this point via the GUI, but I can ssh...that's about it.

I don't understand why it broke -- it was working fine.

I've tried every suggestion and still no X...

The only way I can get my desktop to boot is if I remove xorg.conf completely.

You've tried logging in at a shell and starting X manually? What were the error messages?

If you use the proprietory nVidia drivers and have upgraded your kernel then you will need to reinstall those drivers. 90% of the time that's the issue.

            I can't get to a shell...ctrl+alt+backspace reboots the computer, and ctrl+alt+f1 doesn't do anything....so I can't see exactly the error message.

I'm using ATI by the way, not nvidia

The vesa driver fails as well?

If you boot into recovery mode and then

              nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and change the driver line in Section Device to
              "vesa"
can you at least boot into the gui?
