    Disappointed in Thunderbird on Kubuntu/Ubuntu

I'm in the process of transitioning from Windows to Ubuntu, and more recently from Ubuntu to Kubuntu. I like Kubuntu's configurability and, ridiculous as it may seem, its color scheme.

I have been using Thunderbird on my Windows system for at least two years, maybe more. There are things about it that irritate me -- e.g., it doesn't have anywhere near the configurability of Eudora, which, as far as I'm concerned, was the perfect email client, and the integration of it's addressbook stinks. I've learned to live with it, but I find the way it performs on Ubuntu/Kubuntu extremely irritaing: it is very slow in responding to commands, and all its windows, e.g., the spell checkter, the window that shows to progress of the send operation, etc., etc., open to the size of the program window itself; my efforts to get these different windows to remember a smaller size are simply ignored.

I've given Evolution and Kontact/Kmail a try, but find Thunderbird, even with the degraded performance compared to the Windows installation, preferable. So, my quesitons:

[1] There was a recent upgrade of Thunderbird from Canonical -- 1.5.0.13 to 1.5.0.14! Why in the world did they bother with the latter? Why didn't they give us 2.0.0.0 +?

[2] Anybody got any idea what's going on with my installation? [My machine is a custom built with a Pentium IV and 512K of RAM, and I've still got Fiesty.]

[3] Is there another email client I might try?

    Thanks in advance.

Beats me, but sometimes it is better not to use repositories:

Why there are dead links ?

I will elaborate on this a bit because I went through the same.

The ubuntuzilla script allows you to download the latest versions and keep them up to date with the latest versions.

If you are on feisty I would install gdebi from adept /synaptic first. This will then show up as "open with" when you download. Do that, let it install itself. Run the scripts you need. They are on the link mike gave you and you should be all set

Yes, as Fintan says, if you get ubuntuzilla, you may see some “unmet dependencies” that you need to install – just write them down and get them through Adept in Kubuntu (K > System > Adept package Manager, type the package name in Search in Adept, then when it finds it, click “Request Install”).
I believe mine were just two:

        libnotify-bin
        gdebi

        . . . piece of cake.

I like T-Bird because I came from Outlook Express (not as good as T-Bird, of course!). I also noticed the look and feel of T-Bird sort of reminded me of Netscape Communicator, which I was using 1998 to 2005, which I liked.

Because they don't backport new versions of applications to existing releases, they only release bug- and security-fixes.
