I can't.

It's one of the disadvantages of having a million ways to accomplish similar things in linux. You can never be quite sure how all these different approaches are interacting or stepping on each others toes.

The setting in kcontrol only affects kde apps (or possibly non-kde apps that are aware of 'kde settings')

The setting in kcontrol has no effect on firefox or thunderbird, for example.

x-www-browser is an 'universal' setting
