    Command line errors.

I've been trying to install beryl and at the moment if I put "beryl-manager" on the command line it seems to run some sort of check as it tries to start up.
My problem is I can't read the error quick enough before the WSOD (white screen of death).
Does anyone know if there is a log file where I can read it ? Or failing that a way of creating one if I try it again.
    I am using Konsole.
I should also add that when I get the WSOD I press ctrl-alt-F2 and I reboot because I don't know how to recover from the WSOD. This is the reason I don't get to see the error message.

    Thanks for looking

Can you open a Konsole window, and type "beryl" in it? If I remember correctly, that will run a system check and output the results for you in the window.

When I typed beryl I got the wsod, but if I clicked at the bottom right hand side I got a partial cube going round very slowly with a red jewel at the top and bottom.
When I put "beryl --test only" I got this:

      ged@ged:~$ beryl --test only

Yeahhhh -- I'm not ATI-savvy, but I think you've got it. Can you open the Konsole and run
        Code:
        glxgears
        ?

Drag the graphic off the window, so you can see it, and tell me what the fps figure is, after 2 or 3 calculations are printed.

          glxgears gives:
          ged@ged:~$ glxgears
          2034 frames in 5.3 seconds = 386.598 FPS
          1582 frames in 5.3 seconds = 296.621 FPS
          1469 frames in 5.0 seconds = 293.776 FPS

What interests me is that you said ati.
I used to have problems with an ati card and replaced it with an nvidia one.

Uh - oh. You should not be running AIGLX if you have an Nvidia card. But glxgears runs, so you must be running glx.

            Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

So why does Beryl find an AIGLX server? That's kinda weird! :P

Did you ever open the Konsole and give it

            Code:
            sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
            ?

If not, do it now, then restart the xserver with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, log back in, open your Konsole and run
            Code:
            beryl
            again.

Did the: sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite

              sudo: nvidia-xconfig: command not found

Did: "apt-get install nvidia-xconfig" and tried again but got an error "--add-argb-glx-visuals" unrecognised option.
I have added this in my xorg.conf manually when following other instructions but it has gone. I had also edited the wacom out to stop the error messages, but that has gone back to normal aswell.

                Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I'm going to challenge the assumption that you actually have the Nvidia proprietary driver installed. I'm thinking maybe you're running the "nv" driver -- is that possible? There's no evil in using "nv", but you can't run Beryl or Compiz with it. Do you want to install the proprietary driver?

I want to install a driver that will work with beryl and tux racer for my boy.

OK, I recommend you download and install Envy, and then run Envy to install the Nvidia proprietary driver. Here is the instruction:

                    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3086232.0

Once the Nvidia driver installed (i.e. you see the Nvidia splash screen and then log in), open the Konsole and run the nvidia-xconfig command as I gave it above. Then we'll get back to Beryl.

I already had envy in so uninstalled and got your version. Installed the nvidia driver but glxgears doesn't work and "beryl --test only" gives:

                      ged@ged:~$ beryl --test only

                        HMmmmmmmm.

OK, you're saying you ran the Envy installer, and it appeared to install the Nvidia driver? And then you had it restart the X server, and you saw the Nvidia green and black splash screen, and then you logged in?

If that's all "YES", then the next step is to open the Konsole window and give it
                        Code:
                        sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
That will re-write your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with glx enabled.

You've done it. I,ve tried for weeks to get this working and now that cube goes round that fast it makes me dizzy.
                          Should I have 33 desktops ?

                          Thanks very much dibl

beryl check also now identifies the xserver:

                          Detected xserver : NVIDIA

Might have spoke a bit too soon. It all froze up with none of the desktops responding.
                            I'll keep playing with it.

                              Aha!

You can right-click on your desktop, choose "configure desktop", and make sure that only one desktop is enabled (Beryl will convert that to 4 "viewports").

                              Sounds like progress!
