    Envy Problem

Hi. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu and used the Envy utility to install the latest ATI driver. All went well, i let the utility configure the driver and i then i rebooted, upon checking i got ----

    barry@barry-desktop:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
    direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
    barry@barry-desktop:~$

Any ideas as to why this should happen. I had a search around but couldn't find anything similar.

    Regards Barryg

Execute "grep WW /var/log/Xorg.0.log && grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log" and post what that comes back with.

        Re: Envy Problem

        From Ubuntu Feisty Installation Guide
        http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

        Post-Installation Checks

Run the following command to check its output to ensure the fglrx driver is installed properly:

        $ fglrxinfo
        display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 Series
        OpenGL version string: 2.0.6650 (8.40.4)

The OpenGL vendor string should read ATI and not Mesa.

If you see a message like 'Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":1.0"' then you may have to add the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (see [2]):
        File: /etc/X11/xorg.conf

        Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "0"
        EndSection

Thanks for the links, i thought the idea of Envy was to make installation of drivers a breeze

            Re: Envy Problem

If it's any comfort, Envy didn't work well for me either (also an ATI card). My problem differed from yours, though. Once I had the ATI driver going, my card (X700) sounded like a turbine -- the fan was running at full speed like in the latest 3D games even if there was no 3D on the screen. I'm currently putting together a new machine and it will be using an Nvidia card (7950GT). ATI will probably be the choice of the future now that they opened their specs, but that will take some time.
