    Adept and apt-get problems (localhost connection refused) [SOLVED]

    Hi all! I would like to say that I have really enjoyed this community and the help and encouragement it provides. I have searched this forum, google (of course), linuxforums, linuxquestions, etc. and have not had any luck at all with my problem.

    For some reason, adept (and apt-get) cannot connect to the repositories and I cannot update, upgrade, or install any software at all! I feel as if I've been crippled by this (and I'm sure that it's something I probably did somewhere) and it would be so wonderful to get this working again.

    Whenever I try to update (sudo apt-get update), after every location I get this error:

    Could not connect to localhost:4001 (127.0.0.1). - connect (111 Connection refused)

    Any ideas? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, as I have no idea how to fix this (have tried using different repositories, mirrors, etc. with no luck). Thank you so much for your time.

    Post your /etc/apt/sources.list and we will see if anything unusual pops out at us.

        Well, the first thing that pops out, is you did/are/were using Automatix. Automatix is known to mess with the /etc/apt/sources.list, which results in Adept not working.

        Edit (as root) the sources.list file and comment out everything between #AUTOMATIX REPOS START and #AUTOMATIX REPOS END (put a # and a space in front of each line). Save and then in a Linux Console shell, type:

        sudo apt-get update
        This will resynchronize the package index files from their sources. Exit the Console and open Adept Manager. See if this doesn't fix your problem.

          Okay, I opened the sources.list file in kate (as root) and commented out the automatix lines, saved, and went to the shell. When I execute "sudo apt-get update" I get the exact same errors as before. Just to make sure, I opened Adept Manager (both graphically and from console) and it still has the same problems: localhost connection refused.

          Is there something else that I'm missing? I heard about Automatix screwing up Adept but not until long after I used it (once, just to install the w32 codecs) and now greatly regret it...

          Any more ideas about what could be causing this? I also looked my network configurations and everything seems fine.

            I also used Adept and thought it was great, but it really is not. I had some very weird problems that all stemmed from my use of Adept. Several people on this forum suggested I use Synaptic instead because I would avoid the same kind of problems. They were correct. Since switching to Synaptic, I've had no install/update/remove problems at all.

            Also besides the two Automatix comment lines and everything in between, cited in the post above, there's another automatix line above those you need rem out.

              The two additional lines referred to are:
              deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty restricted main multiverse universe #Added by software-properties
              deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted #Added by software-properties

              These add sources (source code) repositories. Unless you are compiling from source code, you don't need these two repositories, so they can be commented out as well.

                Did you use Automatix to install the Nvidia driver? If my quick skim of the post is correct, that was probably where things went awry.

                  Okay, great news! Adept is now working, and I am able to update, upgrade, and install software.

                  In looking back, I did not use Automatix to install the Nvidia driver (had to do it from console because I used the alternate install CD last year).

                  I would like to thank all of you so much for your help. I've got things working just fine so far, though my solution is somewhat round-about (maybe some of you know an easier way or one that eliminates the remove and reinstall steps):

                  SOLUTION:

                  1. I used "sudo apt-get --purge remove anon-proxy" to remove anon-proxy from my system (it was screwing with my proxy settings).

                  2. I downloaded the package "anon-proxy" from http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/web/anon-proxy (the online Ubuntu package database).

                  3. I reinstalled this package from the downloaded .deb and in configuration told anon-proxy NOT to set the httproxy variable (the only question it has in configuration).

                  4. I rebooted my computer and everything was fine. "sudo apt-get update" runs successfully, as does adept and its updates and upgrades.



                  I think I may give Synaptic a try also, now that I have an easier way to install it (as opposed to going through dependency hell).
                  I'll also work with Google a little more next time to save you all...
