problem accessing remote repository from Kubuntu running on VMWare

Hi
I am running Kubuntu on VMWare. I am trying to access a rubyforge repository from inside Kubuntu.
I try:
svn checkout svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/proj_name proj_name
I trued the http version too
and i get the following error:

unknown hostname 'rubyforge.org'

I am not sure what is going on here. Any help is appreciated.

First things first: are you able to connect to the Internet from Kubuntu, e.g. by issuing sudo apt-get update ...?
