    What is ADEPT ???

Is ADEPT the Kubuntu repository ? I open up ADEPT and it shows there are 937 packages installed and "nothing" new available.

Where can I get new packages ?

Could someone post a "newbie level" explanation of ADEPT.

Adept (or, more accurately, Adept Manager) is a GUI for apt-get, which is the package management tool for Debian's package system, Apt. You can read more than you need to know here: Apt, Adept... you get the idea.
    For external use only.

      OK.

When you open Adept, click "Fetch Updates". This refreshes the dpkg database that is on your system with information about the latest updates. Then you can click "Preview Changes" to see which packages have updates, and if you want to update them, you can click "Apply".

If you want more packages installed, you can scroll down the list of packages, or search in the little window for a particular package, and then "mark" that one for installation by clicking "Request Install" in the window, after you click on the package name.

      Hope this helps a little!

        Hey Guys,

Thanks for responses, I'll have to get to the local library [where the wireless signal is] and let you know my success -- more later.

Now if you could only get my optical mouse [plugged in PS2 port] to work !!
That "tiny" IBM track pointer is making me crazy.

Once in adept you control which repositories you actually access through the adept menu/Manage repositories. If you aren't sure which repository the package you want to install is located in then make sure you check main, universe, restricted and multiverse in the kubuntu software tab. There is also a 3rd party tab there where you can add cdrom if you are trying to pull something off an installation cd.

On the ibm with mouse issue I had to set mouse touchpad to autodisable in the bios to be able to connect a mouse to my thinkpad. You should see something on booting your laptop that tells you what key to press to get into it's bios menu. If you are confused by this you can post back with your laptop model and I will try to give you more detailed information.

Let's not forget the Lazy Man's Guide to Kubuntu:

K-Menu button (lower left of your main screen) > Add/Remove Programs.

You will not find everything there, but there's lots of common, mainstream programs/packages to look at.

              opie,

When you say "autodisable mouse pad", my T-21 Thinkpad has the red Track Pointer.
The PS2 mouse has been working with other distros [Win98SE, PSlinuxOS, Xandros] without any BIOS changes.
I'd hate to change BIOS with every change of dualboot [right now Win98SE & Kubuntu]

In the bios config / keyboard mouse you should have an option to set autodisable or automatic.
It shouldn't interfere with the functioning of the mouse with other operating systems so you shouldn't have to change it back and forth, but it is worth a try.
