    Filter Web Content BEFORE it hit's the domain {SOLVED!}

Greetings and salutations. What I want to do seems simple enough, however I seem to be asking google the wrong questions. I've also done a search here, with no avail.

    Anyrate, on with it.

I've Feisty and I want to install dual NIC's; I can do that, have the DSL router on one NIC and the other feeding the network with internet traffic; I can do that.

What I want to do is setup Kubuntu; or any alternates are welcome, to filter key words; we know the ones to filter, IP Black List, AV, and possibly a printer auditing program to bill pages to an account. The latter is a 'whim' though, the focus is on the content filters.

My boggle is that I've found several solutions, however the seem to have to run on the actual MACHINE that is surfing.

I am looking for a starting point on making a 'stand alone' box/slim client that will filter all content; aka any content received via the DSL Router and piped out of NIC #2, and have the filtered content fed to the network?

Reason? My 7 year old learned the word 'porn'.. That's what I get for watching news on the TV eh? Private schools, close circle of conservative people, and they learn it off of public tv. Oh well, i should have 'filtered' PBS. ROFL!!

Thanks for ANY help here, and I do not need 'user' accounts or anything. I want to filter ALL traffic, even mine.

It's not for me to tell you how you should be raising your child, I'm not even a parent myself, but I think you're looking for a complicated technical solution to a problem which could be probably be solved by just talking to your kid and/or not allowing them to use the Internet without adult supervision. How can you be sure that the kid wouldn't come across something inappropriate which the filters didn't pick out as being naughty?

On a not unrelated note, the Australian government spent $84 million (dunno if that's US or Oz dollars) on Internet porn filters. Apparently a teenager worked out how to bypass it in 30 minutes. http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/08/25/1258257.shtml.

Yeah, kids are pretty good at getting around stuff. However, I am not, nor will be, the first that filters web content.

Talking to the kids I've done, however what when a simple search leads to 'da porn'. Besides, if they ever end up in therapy, I can honestly say I did my best to separate them from the evils of the world. Well, until they are older, however IMHO no 7 year old should see that kinda stuff.

If more parents took as much interest in what their kids are exposed to, and what activities they are up to, there'd be no 'Columbine' shootings.

      Your mileage may vary.

Anyhoo, I'll figure it out, it's only a computer how hard can it be.

Is this what you are looking:

        Alternatives to Windows Software
        http://www.linux.ie/newusers/alternatives.php
        Censorware / Webpage Filtering.
I haven't cause for using censorware myself, but the question was raised by a father of two that he would like to use something equivalent to NetNanny to ensure that the coarser side of the Intenet wouldn't be discovered by his children.
DansGuardian seems to pretty much fit the bill here and is free for non commercial use.
As far as technical details are concerned, DansGuardian works by filtering out webpages based on content rather than on what the URL of the page is. It can also filter out files based on not just the file extension but also on the files mime-type.

THANKS!! And I apologize to the community if I sounded crass. I let my personal opinions dominate the 'problem'..

Anyrate, I found a GRAND article on how to build one. HERE

I've been trained on Novell 'sniffer appliances'; which do what I'd need plus about 10,000 things MORE than I need, however 15k was out of the house budget. LOL!! Well, for THIS anyway...

Thanks again, and this is solved.
