EDIT: OK, vmdk is the one that it builds when you install Windows -- it's 5.5GB on my system. So, it's not finding it yet, because you haven't installed Windows yet. Hmmmm, I vaguely recall having all the confusion that you're presently enduring.

Does it appear to recognize your CD ROM drive? Is your CD ROM drive /dev/scd0 in your /etc/fstab file? If not, we'll have to edit that vmx file accordingly.

Erm, no there is no file called 'fstab' in the etc folder if that's what you're asking

Unrelated information:
the mount-3g which slows down my computer. I found out from KSy guard that only the process that is in charge of my C: drive slows it down. And i don't have any files stored there anyway, so i just kill the process every time i boot up i guess. I did it twice, so i think i'm pretty sure that was the problem

There has to be (or your system will never boot again!)...

If you open a Konsole window, and enter

kate /etc/fstab

it should open and be visible. You want to look at a line near the bottom that looks a lot like this:

/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,atime,noauto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0

It's only stupidity if you're not learning!

OK, then that vmx file I sent you should be workable. I remember it was very tricky to get the Player to respond to putting the Win XP CD into the CD ROM drive, and I cannot tell you what the magic recipe was, exactly. But, somehow it has to read that vmx file, then you have to get it to "trigger" when you close the CD ROM drive with the Win XP CD in it. Once triggered, it will proceed, but it was some misery and many repetitions to get it to start. You may want to Google for help on that, or review the user docs I e-mailed you, because I really don't know what makes that work when it does work. :P

On your Player>Preferences, put a bullet in the button under "Removable Devices" that says "Show as Buttons"

Then notice on the CD ROM button, that if you click it a red x will appear, indicating it is disconnected. I think maybe you want to put your Win XP CD in while it is "connected", i.e. no red x showing. If that doesn't work, put the Win XP CD in while the red "x" is showing, and then when you hear the CD ROM drive start to spin up, click the tab to make the red "x" disappear.

Well, yeah be assured that i'll be using vmware on some more computers.

And, there was already a bullet under removable devices> show as buttons

i don't know what red button and red x you are talking about..

i've kept it as the default single-click if that's what you're talking about (clicking once) because when i click the cd rom drive even when a cd's not inside, all it does is open the cdrom drive

i hate coming so far just to find a stone wall!

What stage is it? should i just google 'setting up virtual machine in vmware' ?

EDIT: why does this website tell you to download a .tar file corresponding to the OS one wants?

Hmmmm. A confounding fact is that they changed the interface somewhat from 1.0 to 2.0, and I'm not sure what you're seeing. The leftmost menu item on mine is called "Player", and then immediately to the right of that is a tab that says "CD ROM (IDE 1:0)". Then to the right of that is another tab that says "Ethernet".

Does yours look anything like that?


EDIT: I sent you a little screenshot of what mine looks like (hoping to find out what it is different).

But you have a really nice desktop background, if that's any consolation.

Is there any function or option to "load" a virtual machine? What happens when you try to load that vmx file I sent -- does it seem to have any effect? Somehow, you've got to get it pointed to the CD ROM drive, and it seems to me that it was by using the vmx file, which calls out /dev/scd0 as the CD ROM drive to use. :P


On your top screen, there's a drop-down menu item where it's looking for a .vmx file -- can you point that to the file? Maybe do that 10 seconds after inserting the Win XP CD ROM?

In the WinXPpro.vmx file you sent me, i did a ctrl + f, and there's no '/dev/scd0' in the file..

And download his Win XP Pro archive file -- that will get you started. Edit the vmx file to change your CD ROM to /dev/scd0 if you need to.

It finally worked!

Thanks you so much, i just had to change whatever it was to '/dev/scd0' and then it booted from the cd room without any glitches.

The screen res is pretty low though, is there any way i can make it full-screen? Even if it can't run on full screen, can the sorrounding not be black and be a normal kubuntu dialogue box in which XP works
