Command line help

How do i get past this screen?

Also, i tried installing comix as mentioned here here; http://linuxondesktop.blogspot.com/2...nstall-on.html

this is what my command line looks like;

nikhil@nikhil-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install comix
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I'm sorry but i'm very new to linux and seem to get frustrated after 4 or 5 tries...

I tried installing VMware but got confused, frustrated and left it. Here's what i did;

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Then, will somebody please explain what the hell this means,

You should be able to install the VMware Player software and before you run the vmware-config.pl script. Install Petr's any-any-update112 patch ( [url]http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/[/url] )

cd /any-any-update112

./runme.pl

I did:

 ROOT # apt-get install vmware-player && [/usr/bin/]vmware-config.pl

as stated here; http://www.penguin.ch/dokuwiki/doku....l:vmware:model

i also downloaded the Win XP pro.tar file.

i'm stuck now, as i do not know what to do

OK -- looks like about 5 questions in there -- I'll answer #1.

The Tab key is your friend!

Just Tab until the "OK" turns red or white or something, then hit Enter and you can move on.

BTW, I've got VMWare Player Ver. 2 -- I noticed you're working with 1.something.

I'll try -- it's been some months since I pulled off the feat, so it may not be super-pretty.

Start here by downloading the free Player : http://www.vmware.com/download/player/

Go ahead and fill in your mother in-law's address where it asks for information.

Now i can't get to that agreement screen! i think that's the process blocking everything else as i've not completed the installation process. Is that why even adept won't open?

vmware installation process is probably using it, but how do i finish the installation now?

OK, that's a stuck apt system.

sudo dpkg-configure --a

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install

Well, just close all the windows that have anything to do with your prior attempt at installing the Player.

Then try the dpkg command again.

so i managed to install vmware player (1.0.2.. version)i still need to make a virtual machine to load windows on..erm..i'm going to shamelessly ask you for a link/tut to do this..

You, know I have Ver. 1.something on my Ubuntu installation, and it runs the exact same virtual machine (Win XP) that I run with Ver. 2 on Kubuntu. So I think it will make no difference. The only thing is, whenever I open the Ver. 1, it tries to sell me on getting the upgrade to Ver. 2, so you have to tell it to skip that (Lord knows what would happen if you tried to upgrade it ...) :P

So yeah, let it install the Ver. 1 that it wants to.

Do you have a Win XP installation CD? Or were you going to try a different OS on the Player?

Stand by - I'm going to e-mail you a file that you'll need, as soon as I figure out which one it is.

EDIT: OK, I sent you a vmx file, which is the one that I have been using. It has ethernet, USB, CD/DVD drive, and sound enabled. Unfortunately, the device name for all of those are not always the same from one system to the next, so what will probably have to happen is, you might need to open the vmx file with kate and edit it.

For example, my CD/DVD drive is /dev/scd0 (from my /etc/fstab file). If yours is anything else, then you'll have to edit that line in the vmx file. Other items might need tweaked too -- I had to experiment around a bit to get USB working, for example.

The only thing you HAVE to have working at the very first is the CD ROM drive, so you can install Win XP. The other things can be tweaked later.

Basically, you open "Player", point it to the vmx file that I sent you, where you saved it, then insert your Win XP SP2 installation CD, and pray while fiddling with the Player "troublehoot>reset" menu. At a point when your CD ROM "catches" the bootable CD, and Player recognizes this, you will be amazed and delighted to observe the normal Win XP installation screen open in a window on your Kubuntu desktop. From there on, it's the standard Win XP installation routine.
