noteedit: how to play all instruments?

Hi all,

I have installed noteedit, lilypond and timidity from universe. Noteedit works fine, re setting notes and playing the tunes with many instruments...
...but not all instruments! As a noteedit newbie, I don't know what to do.

How can I play all instruments?

1) I start timidity in a console with

sudo timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os1l -s 44100

(this is from a wiki. I do not know what these commands mean and do. Anyway, after having closed noteedit, I close timidity in the terminal with <Ctrl>+<c>))

2) I start noteedit , input notes and play

3) To change instruments, I do from the menu:
> insert > instrument and choose from the list of some 120 instruments. Piano, organ, cymbal, violin, harmonica and others work fine. Others such as banjo, square wave, sawtooth wave, to name just a few, remain mute.

4) In noteedit settings > audio I have a choice of three timidity channels: 0, 1, and 2. Switching channels does not help.

5) My soundcard cannot be the problem, because I can generate and sound all kinds of square, sawtooth and other waveforms, when I use the Commodore C64 Emulator VICE

Anybody had the same problems with noteedit? Any suggestions, please?

I haven't messed with soft synth in Linux yet, so I will compare to what happens in Windows, maybe you can figure out something.
Some instruments are implemented as VST plugins instead of stand-alone programs, so you have a sequencer loaded, like Cubase, Protools or the like, and open your VST plugins, which are your instruments.
If Noteedit works this way, that is, in order to play an analog pad you need plugin X installed, than it might be your problem. Check if there is anything else to be installed.
I may be absolutely wrong, of course.

You seem to be absolutely right! You did put me on the right track: I run noteedit with timidity as a software synthesizer. And in wikipedia I read now that timidity

requires Gravis Ultrasound patches or sf2 SoundFonts

whatever this is. Prbably noteedit provides some of these fonts, but not all.

I guess, I have to delve deeper into noteedit/timidity and the mysteries of sound to find out.
