    VLC freezing system

Hello. My system is freezing when I try to play a DVD with DTS sound using VLC (with LEDs blinking - kernel panic?). I have vlc set up to use OSS with device /dev/dsp (when I put /dev/null in there, it does not freeze). I have a NForce2 sound card and connected it to SPDIF output with OSS set to use Pass Through.

Is there any way to find out what's the problem?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had exactly the same problem.
Admittedly I am using analog sound, but I think I had similar symptoms.

I solved it by installing 'vlc-plugin-arts' and using that as my output rather than 'OSS'.

Of course, I needed to configure 'arts' to use OSS by selecting 'System Settings->Sound System->Hardware' and selecting 'Open Sound System' for the audio device.

    I hope this helps!

I think that VLC insists on attempting to use ALSA over OSS, but selecting 'arts' resolved it.
