    Installing software - RealPlayer for Linux

    Hi,

    I know this is one of the most basic operations, but this is the first time i'm installing something which didn't come with adept. I did try looking for help on the internet, and there was a section on Ubuntu forums explaining how to install RealPlayer specifically..but i tried and nothing happened.

    I have the .bin file lying on my Desktop, i can't double click on it. I don't know how to open .bin files through the terminal

    The section on Ubuntu forums:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...llationMethods

    any help would be appreciated.

      Re: Installing software - RealPlayer for Linux

      Now the problem's defined a little. I found this somewhere:
      Q. I am getting the error "libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file" when trying to run RealPlayer in Linux. What do i do?
      You might get the following error on certain Linux distributions when trying to launch RealPlayer
      realplay.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

      If you get this error, you need to install the following library:

      compat-libstdc++-33.

      For Fedora Core, you would need to run the following command in superuser mode:

      yum install compat-libstdc++-33

      For a Debian based system, run the following command in superuser mode:

      apt-get install libstdc++5

      For other distributions of Linux/Unix, please install the compat-libstdc++-33 library as recommended by your vendor.
      I want you to tell me how exactly to install this library?

        Looks like
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install libstdc++5
        should take care of it.

            Code:
            Enter the complete path to the directory where you want
            RealPlayer to be installed. You must specify the full
            pathname of the directory and have write privileges to
            the chosen directory.
            Directory: [/home/nikhil/RealPlayer]:
            Where are files normally installed?

                Glad you're happy.

                Did you read the http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_F...8RealPlayer.29 link? "Helix is the open-source package that plays Realplayer files. Realplayer is actually based on this package."

                You could have installed Helix via Adept and gotten the ability to play RealPlayer files. In this case, RealPlayer (the proprietary program) was based on the Open Source Helix program.

                  I have install Helix player via the terminal but when I tried to play rmvb files a window pops up with the title 'component missing' saying the player does not have the capabilities to playback this content and that it requires: audio/x-pn-realaudio then suggests I should install realplayer instead...how come?...thx
