Compiz Fusion on Kubuntu and Ubuntu

To put it simple: CompizFusion works great on Ubuntu, it sucks on Kubuntu.
CompizFusion makes my Kubuntu desktop so slow. I can't understand it because both desktops are running on the same pc, on a different harddisk (both are the same type and manufacture) and my pc is anything but slow (Intel dualcore 3000Mhz , 2 gig of memory and Nvidia 7600 GT videocard.

    What could be the reason?

I think maybe it's kde itself. I've tried tinkering around with a lot of stuff, but kde sometimes can slow things down. Ubuntu uses the simple Gnome interface which is less ram consuming.

      Hi,

I use compiz-fusion on my kubuntu desktop and it works fine. So it must be something to do with your settings.

I'm not sure exactly what the difference between Beryl and Compiz Fusion is, but Beryl works just fine on Kubuntu. Here's a screen shot of mine:

Re: Compiz Fusion on Kubuntu and Ubuntu

Pretty soon, nothing. Beryl's been (or will be, or is being) merged back into Compiz, hence the name "Compiz Fusion".

Anyway, I've heard people say that KDE is lighter and that GNOME is lighter. I don't know which is, but I tend to think it's KDE. I used GNOME once, and found it too clunky and counter-intuitive (especially when switching from Windows).

So, yes, it is something to do with your setup. Care to state hardware, attach your xorg.conf, run glxgears, etc.?

            How did you install ?
From where did you install ?
            How you start Fusion ?
Do you use gdm or kdm ?
What desktop decorations do you use ?
            and so on...

            What is
            From CompositeManager
            https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager
When running AIGLX or Xgl, all windows are rendered to an off-screen buffer. The composite manager is then responsible for drawing the windows to the screen, and has the opportunity to manipulate them, adding in cool effects such as transparency and wobbliness.

There are currently two composite managers available.

            * CompositeManager/Compiz - A combination window manager and composite manager from Novell.
            * CompositeManager/Beryl - A fork of Compiz that adds some additional features. It is generally much less stable than Compiz.
            * CompositeManager/CompizFusion - Compiz plus addons from Beryl.

            As said http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_To_Co...04_Feisty_Fawn
Compiz Fusion is a very exciting new advancement in Desktop Effects. Be that as it may, Compiz Fuzion is NOT for Beginners. It is in development now, and is not stable.

Here Compiz fusion + fglrx + XGL is working. As fine as you could expect alpha programs to work

The nvidia driver is the latest installed with Envy

I start fusion with ALT-F2 and this command "compiz --replace"

I use the standard decoration "crystal"

              In compiz fusion setting manager:

Texture Filter is set on "good"
              Detect Refresh Rate is "off"
              Lighting is "on"
Sync to Vblank is "off" because on makes it even worser
              Detect outputs is : 640x480+0+0
Refresh rate is set on "200"

I have no idea if I use GDM or KDM. What is the difference how can I know which one I'm using?

Again in Ubuntu it is working fine, but I don't like Gnome...

BTW Beryl is doing fine in Kubuntu

                About compiz fusion:

                There is for gnome
                compiz-gnome
                libcompizconfig-backend-gconf

                and there is for kde
                compiz-kde
                libcompizconfig-backend-kconfig

How to Install Compiz Fusion on Ubuntu- For GNOME and KDE users
                http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-t...tu-58113.shtml

                kdm = KDE Display Manager
                gdm = GNOME Display Manager

You can easily change default display manager:
                Code:
                sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
                or
                Code:
                sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
And choose your favorite display manager

You can run kde with gdm or gnome with kdm. Don't know if it matters with composite manager.

I use the standard decoration "crystal"

Rog131, thanks for the help, but it didn't work. Checking the Compiz-Fusion forum learned me that I'm not the only one with this problem. According to some folk on the forum it is related to KDE. For now I will use Beryl in KDE, which works fine, very fine. I'll give Compiz-Fusion another try with the release of Gutsy.

                  So thanks again,
