    Maybe I'm wrong...
it is (most likely) due to the file system on your portable hdd.
(most likely) your portable hdd has a FAT32 file system on it.
that file system has a file size limit of 4GB.

first off you have to make sure you have the ntfs-3g package installed on your kubuntu.
that package has the necessary drivers that support read/write access to/from mickeysoft ntfs filesystem.
you can check/install that through adept.

once you get that sorted out, i think you have to go into "system settings" and into "disks & filesystems".
from there (in admin mode) you shall likely be able to mount your ntfs stuff.
basically, you hook up your ntfs filesystem to a kubuntu folder.
and then access it from the file manager just like any other folder.
and you can do the usual copy&paste, drag&drop stuff...

i never use the gui tools, i always do this stuff off the command line.
so i'm not sure exactly how this is done from the gui.
but i'm sure someone else will be able to direct you step by step on this.

    meanwhile...hth,
    cheers
    y.

    ps:
if you want to keep using that portable hdd to exchange stuff from/to linux/windoze,
you should probably consider putting an ntfs or an ext3 file system on it, so as to avoid
    file size limitations...

        good dibl...
i shall have to remember you had that how to posted on this subject.
        very handy indeed.

what about a whole gui version of it?
do you think it would help no-cli-newbies?
        i would certainly help me
'cause i really don't know a thing about how those guis work.
and, anyway, some of the new users may be (quite understandably so) reluctant to using the cli.
