sound plays fast

I just installed kubuntu feisty on my compaq with an AMD sempron processor and ATI Radeon video card and an ATI IXP SB400 AC'97 audio controller

The problem I'm having is when ever I play a song in a media player (any of them) ogg, or a cd or otherwise, it plays like someones holding down the fast forward button.

any ideas how to fix this?

2 things crop up to my mind...

a) wrong driver (or some drivers issues anyway):

b) wrong sample rate:
check if any custom sample rate is set in system settings -> sound system -> hardware

Turns out it might be a xine problem.
I played an audio file in xmms and it was just fine, but in amarok and kaffeine it plays in fast forward.

Any suggestions on how to fix xine?

Well, if it works fine in xmms... Use xmms. Unless there's something about xine you absolutely must have.

I installed it on my sons computer and he wants to use amarok.

In Amarok: Settings > Configure Amarok > Engine > Sound system. Pick the "xmms" option.
