    back up

I just have a quick question. Do we have a back up utility for LInux? I was just wondering, and if we do, Can you let me know the name so I can downloaded with synaptic package. Thanks.

    Re: back up

Not to be a smart-aleck, but for me, the Linux backup utility is called "cp".

I do have the luxury of a big desktop computer with multiple hard drives -- makes it kind of a no-brainer.

      Re: back up

tar (see the man page) will serve one better than cp, especially if space is an issue.

If processing power isn't a problem, also look into gzip/bzip2.

If you just want backups and you'd like a nice Qt frontend, KDE comes with a little program called Keep. It should be at K Menu > System > Keep, though I personally have pushed it into "More Applications", since I have no need for backups. (I also have never had a disk failure, etc.)
        For external use only.

Once a month or so I use the Acronis emergency recovery disk 8) from my Windoze box to make a system image of the Kubuntu's box's system HDD. Being a GUI kinda Guy, in between I use ARK to back up my working files to an external USB HDD.

Incidentally, I find the Acronis image extremely useful whenever the "upgrade" bug strikes . The Edgy > Feisty experience was especially memorable, for all the wrong reasons of course. > -

Unless you're up to recovering single files ...

This works for me as well as doing regular data backups on DVD.
