Java JRE 1.6.0_02 installation

Hello,
has anybody tried to install and configure the latest Java JRE for Firefox the way described on Java's site: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#enable ? I think I have done everything correctly, including the creation of the link libjavaplugin_oji.so (created via a root terminal, not with "su") but Java doesn't start.
I know there is a simpler method via aptget, but as the files look installed correctly I would like to know if someone has been able to install it the manual way.

I had some trouble with that too. I think I solved it by purging all the other Java packages (ones that provide Java, mind you) via Adept.
