    Mp3, mpeg, and mpg problem

Okay, so I've got kubuntu running a little better on my second day, although I'm still experiencing problems such as this.

I can not play mp3, mpeg, or mpg through amarok or kaffiene.

It said i need to download the codecs and pluggins to play all those types, and i click ok, in which it failed... Every attempt leads to a fail....

I'm guessing these players suck, and i need to download others....

Can you guys recommend what i need to do, and would it be in adept?

On the contrary, those are great media players.

    Have you followed these instructions?
    For external use only.

      Amarok sucks ?

      Never heard that one .

Seems like something is misconfigured in your system and amarok can't find the codecs by itself. You can try to install them manually from adept.

You'll need a package called libxine1-ffmpeg. Install it with adept. Remember to update the package list and your system before doing it.

No, the players work fine. 8) What you need, and which Kubuntu does not provided in the installation because of copyright issues, are the proprietary codecs needed to play certain file formats.

You need to add a few packages through Adept Manager, after adding the medibuntu repositories to Adept:

        deb http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free
        deb-src http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free

Once these repositories are added to Adept, tell adept to Fetch Updates. When that is finished, you need to select for installation the required packages. You will probably find that installing the following packages will be all that you need. I know that they are required for playing DVDs, but Mp3's still require something else, I think.

        libdvdcss2
        w32codecs
libxine1-plugins (consisting of the following packages)
        libxine1-console
        libxine1-ffmpeg
        libxine1-gnome
        libxine1-kde

You may then need to upgrade the following packages, but only if you still can't play DVD's:

        amarok
        amarok-xine
        k3b
        kaffeine
        kaffeine-xine
        libk3b2

Search the forum for mp3 and medibuntu. You should find plenty of posts describing your problem, and the fixes.

Re: Mp3, mpeg, and mpg problem

mpeg movies should be covered by the same codec.

As explained here wmv and DVD will need extra codecs (w32codecs and libdvdcss2) that are not in the official repos (even universer), you will need to add the mediabuntu to adept to install them:

Correct. If you can pull it from Adept, it is 'free to you.'

Err.... you sure had hear something about FREE and open source software somewhere, didn't you? .

It's all about having access to the source code, and having the right to modify and distribute it.

In this context, we are talking about free as in "free speech" not "free beer".

hahah i know open-source, i've just never heard it in that context....

so free is free to mess with, so its open source,
and non free you can't mess with, so you better hope you have the right one, or it wont work....

That's probably the best description I've seen yet, on free vs non-free repositories.
