    A rogue icon? (All sorted - Thankyou.)

    Hello.

    I've got the following icon on my screen. It just appeared a couple of days ago. Anyone know why?

    [Desktop Entry]
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Type=Directory
    BgImage=
    Icon=desktop

    X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=desktop_kdebase

    Thanks

    Paul.

    Is there a file named "[some].desktop" in your user's Desktop folder, i.e. ~/Desktop ...?

      Hi UnicornRider,

      All I can see is :

      /home/frog/Desktop

      Is that any help or should I be going up a level?

      Thanks.

            My "problem" is that as long as I don't know anything about this ominous file's background, I'm reluctant to advise you to just kill the beast, so to speak ...

            Update: it seems as if your desktop were displaying the "hidden" file ~/Desktop/.directory ... but why

              Mmmmm,

              Well I know even less. As I said it just appeared one day. I did remove it to the trash can but it popped up again the next time I brought up the system. I've just deleted it again to see if that happens again.

              It seems odd to me as the contents of this file seem not to say much at all and as a 'novice' it's got me wondering! Perhaps I'll wander around the garden seeking inspiration.

              Either way thanks - if anything suddenly comes to mind wack me another response.

              Cheers

              Paul.

                Merely a gut feeling, but does (temporarily) deactivating the desktop icons (as follows) change anything?

                [Alt][F2] kcontrol > Desktop > Behaviour > Show Icons = "false"

                  Oh well.

                  I cut and pasted your command line as not sure of syntax but got:

                  Could not run specified command. (Which I repeat below).

                    Nice try

                    Actually, [Alt][F2] is the shortcut for the "Run Command" from the K Menu - where, in turn, "kcontrol" is the command to be issued to ...

                    In KDE's original Control Center, being launched thereby, I wanted you to navigate to the module "Desktop | Behaviour" and, therein, de-select the option "Show Icons" ...

                    O.k.?

                      Ah! Ah! I know this one!

                      It's not Show Icons. There's an option there called "Show hidden files". That's what you want to uncheck.

                        Doh!

                        Well that's the problem with newbies!!

                        I flashed thru the commands and found that the 'show hidden files' option was ticked under the 'File Icons' tag - so problem solved.

                        Grateful for your help.

                          No problem. I did the same thing on my first install.
