    Installing downloaded programs

I am new to linux, well sort of.
I have been running Linux webservers for 10 years and this is the first home linux I have installed.
    "Bye Bye Vista"
This is a 64 bit feisty and all is running like a clock on a very high end machine.
AMD FX-60x2-64, 4 gigs memory, nvidia 7800 GTX 512 memory
    and I am impressed.

My question is: I downloaded a linux weather program "wxnet"
    How do I install it?

    Thankyou
    Ron

    Re: Installing downloaded programs

Oh-oh -- you really need to be very cautious about acquiring your applications via the download approach, ickie. Linux is very different from Windows in that regard.

You need to first look in the *buntu repositories (aka "sources"), visible via your Adept Manager (or Synaptic if you choose to install that as your package installation GUI). If it's not in the existing repositories, then your next step should be to Google it and see if a Debian package or source is available for it.

Kubuntu is a Debian Linux, and packages that aren't compiled for it are just going to give you a headache.

There's a lot more to learn about converting .rpm packages, compiling applications, etc. etc. -- I'm just trying to keep you from going splash with your first attempt!

        Re: Installing downloaded programs

I had looked at this a few weeks ago:
        http://www.hutchrick.com/wxnet/docs/...rogram%20suite

It looks a bit daunting respectively "too much for my needs", at least for me.

What do mean by a weather program?

Something that tells you the weather at defined locations? There are a few of those.
Superkaramba-> liquid weather would be a good place to start:
        http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/ssuperkaramba.html

Or the Forecastfox Enhanced add-on for Firefox which also gives you satellite images:
        https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/1978

Or more scientific? I can't help you there.

I hope that helps for a start.

        Cheers

            Re: Installing downloaded programs

            There is this as well:
            http://www.weather-display.com/linux.php

            but it is $$.

I guess if you want wxnet you'll have to read the doc. See link above. Server side shouldn't be a problem.

I would ask on a wxnet forum about dependencies as far as a debian (kubuntu) installation is concerned before installing.

sorry I can't be of more help.

Did a quick read of the installation instructions for this program. It probably will run in Kubuntu - it requires that Perl be installed, and at least on my Kubuntu installation, Perl and it's libraries are installed. That said however, the instructions indicate that you have to know where to install the program and its parts, unlike a friendly .deb package that you install via Adept (or Synaptic). I would tend towards a *ubuntu friendly package myself. But, if you want to try this program, I would very strongly recommend that you read through all the instructions that are available for it before you begin.

This is the command, issued from a Linux Console shell. But, if you have Adpet Manager installed, and I believe you do, you will find that a very easy way to get and install the package.

in the "Adpet Manager" I found kweather, not installed and I right clicked it and requested a reinstall

nothing seems to happen, is this a wait and see thing, lol

There's another leftover anxiety from Windows-World, that you can now leave behind. In Linux, you really need not care "where" it is. If it is a GUI package, it will normally appear in your Kmenu menu system, in whatever category it belongs. Some don't, in which case you can run it from the Alt-F2 command line, or a konsole window, by simply entering the name of it.

I could not find it in kmenu but in adept manager is says it is part of KDE and when I click KDE a menu comes up to conect to a server and has 4 choices
below is the menu, before I click anything I thought I'd better ask
