    Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird stop working

    I have a problem that I had on one computer and now has appeared on another fresh install on a second computer. The problem is there in both KDE and Gnome.

    First Thunderbird. It works for a while but after some update it exits immediately with a segmentation fault error. I clear my settings and put in my account details again, but then it immediately exits again and only runs if there are no mail accounts.

    Now firefox. Again, after some update or other, it fails to start, just does busy for a few seconds and then exits with the same error.

    Starting in safe mode also has no effect.

    As I can use both programs in other distros and also Windows, I think this has to be a (k)ubuntu issue?

    What add ons do have in TB and FF respectively. sometimes they cause problems depending n which ones they are.

    Secondly I would try deleting the hidden files in /home/youruser/:
    ./thunderbird (maybe ./mozilla-thunderbird) and
    firefox from ./mozilla.

    These are the config files and can get "whacked" at times.

    Then restart FF and see what happens. Add your add ons one at time and observe.
    Same for TB.

    Never happened to me like like it has with you but........

    I hope this helps

    Cheers

      I have done all that. Removed all local settings and add-ons, reinstalled, but no luck. Firefox was working yesterday on this laptop, but not any more. Some recent update has nuked it.

        Here is the exact message from Thunderbird:

        DOUBLE-CLICK: 400 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

        Mean anything?

          Sorry to hear that. I am on gutsy now and have had my issues with feisty but not that so I doubt I could reproduce it.

          Just a thought:
          can you open FF in the terminal then post whatever the teminal spits out?

          Ditto with TB.

          Maybe you are getting some kind of error message and some of the real experts here can help you further

          Edit: Just saw your reponse:
          DOUBLE-CLICK: 400 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

          That means nothing to me

            Thunderbird error is above. Firefox just gives

            Segmentation fault (core dumped)

            Run in debug mode the last message was

            Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

              Does it do this every time?

                Re: Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird stop working

                Yes, every time. I can't get Firefox to run at all. I can only get Thunderbird to run if I have no account information. Otherwise the mail window flashes up and immediately closes. With Firefox there is not even a window!

                  Re: Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird stop working

                  I see this from time to time. My usual solution is to (shock! horror!) reboot, and that clears up the problem.

                  I have also tried installing the vanilla Thunderbird 2.0, and it seems running that (symlinking ~/.thunderbird to ~/.mozilla-thunderbird), closing and then reopening 1.5 works.

                    Re: Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird stop working

                    Many reboots have failed to cure this problem. It was so debilitating on my Dell laptop that I have now put OpenSUSE on it instead of Ubuntu. I will forego the larger software base for a more stable system.
