    Bad Repos?

Greetings. I got an update notification, and when I went to apply the 71mb update, it failed. Locked the machine.

Reboot, no samba; smb.conf is wrote over, no internet. Reboot entire network, and try updates again. The machine hung. I clicked 'cancel' and it gave a whole list of 'bad repos' that are standard ones.

Is it time to move to Gutsy? Or are the servers down?
    Thanks a ton

      Re: Bad Repos?

I got that huge update -- looked like mostly Open Office-related. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have a fast broadband connection, because it is massive.

But I had no difficulties, so I dunno about your lockup. You have two repos that I don't use, so it might be attributable to one of those. These would be:

      linuxmint
      automatix

Maybe you could try disabling those, just this time, and try it again.

Gutsy -- hmmmm, my Feisty system is very stable and I'm in the middle of trying to get some audiovisual work done, so I think I'll wait until I hear lots of glowing reports of "no trouble here" from Gutsy users -- maybe November.

EDIT: gahhhh, just noticed that they are already commented out - duhhh!

OK, maybe try a different server (U.S.)?

Here is the sources list that worked finally. The 'bolded' section is what hangs when it's enabled... Strange I know, I figured I'd sleep on it and give it a go today, but no joy until I started enabling repos in sequance until it failed.

Anyhoo, dunno what's up, but I am sure it's just a TEMPORARY down mirror or something.

It seems as if the servers were "half-dead":

          Code:
          ROOT # apt-get update

Could not connect to security.ubuntu.com:80 (82.211.81.138)

or maybe "triple-busy" -- that was a monster of an Open Office update -- took 15 minutes on a pretty fast broadband connection at my house. :P

Yeah. The update bust be hammering the servers.
I'm hammering them right now, as a matter of fact.

Wonder what the thing was that made them release an update?

I'm aware of a pretty bad bug in the 64-bit OO spreadsheet -- I haven't checked to see if it's now fixed. I forget exactly how it worked (or didn't work) -- seems like cut and paste or formatting for printing was snarfed up.

Maybe. But would they push the update through security for that?

It dates back to April: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...preadsheet+bug

And I've seen reports of others. Hopefully they bundled up a lot of bug fixes ...

If, as UnicornRider stated, 'half' the repositories in your list were down, it may be that Automatrix gets hung/confused when it encounters a repository entry that it can connect to, but the other repo doesn't respond.

Please quote properly: all I said was that the server(s) for the "security updates" were more or less down.
