    Amarok and Multitasking Problems

I quite like Amarok, but I seem to have serious issues with it and sound quality. Whenever I play songs with it and do something else at the same time, be it openning up Firefox or updating apps with adept or whatever, the music just bogs down and it sounds like an old broken vinyl disk or something.

My computer isn't all that recent (Pentium III, 512mb ram) so maybe it's got something to do with it but it's weird because on Windows, there needs to be a LOT of applications opened for the music to start skipping from lack of memory. Also, I tried using XMMS, and it doesn't do that (at least not as much), but I don't like the interface from xmms, as I'm used to a player with an itunes-like interface.

Is there anything I can do about this? Or can anyone suggest another player?

Perhaps tell Amarok to use the xmms engine?
    For external use only.

How do I do that? The only engine available in the list is xine.
