Data DVD not recognised after burning it.

I have a data DVD that I have saved some info on. I'm running out of space on my HDD so I decided to cut and burn around 4gb of ogg files onto a DVD using K3B.

Now I can't seem to get the computer to recognise it whenever I put it into the DVD drive. There's no problem when I insert movie DVDs (which Fiesty plays) or when I put CDs in there... but when I put in a data DVD nothing seems to come up. I go in to Konqueror and nothing is there for me to go to. In /media there is cdrom0 and cdrom1 but neither work (I also have a CD-RW drive).

I'm not saying that's the case, but it has happened to me either because it was a bad media or a bad burn. Since then, I use one option I can't do without. I use the verify CD option. Did you use it while burning?

Sometimes, through many a reason, the lead out fails to write properly and renders the disc useless. It's happened both under Linux and Windows. If lead out fails, the TOC can't be accessed, that means the disc can't be read. Sometimes, with luck I can retrieve isobuster under wine.

No idea. I did it 3 weeks ago.

Just tried to access an old DVD-ROM. Feisty asks me whether I want to open it in Konqueror and I say yes, but it doesn't open. I've sourced it to media:/scd1 but access is denied. I ran Konqueror as SU and it crashed when I tried to access it.

When I put the DVD-ROM in, the pop-up says "unmounted DVD". I go into system settings and it is mounted but as /proc. Any ideas?

Re: Data DVD not recognised after burning it.

I had this boggle, and changed media types/brands. However, the problem has popped it's little head up again. I was able to burn with Baker, but that does not even work now.

Sometimes the blank is not seen, sometimes it 'pretends to burn'/yes with 'verify' on, sometimes it works.

How I 'fixed' it was mapped my wifes DVD-RW on her XP machine, and burn to that. Hopefully MORE people will figure out that they also have this problem; whether they know it or not, and we can get a bug fix. I've tried different drives also, so that is not the problem.

Still no joy in solving this problem? I ask because sometimes people neglect to post the fix for others to enjoy.
          Thanks.

Do you have a spare DVD-RW media to try a test burn? Throw some data (possibly some of your oggs) and write, and don't forget to either write down or take screenshots of the K3B options you are using, so we could point a bad option marked.
I must let you know of a personal experience: my DVD burner (Sony DRU-510A), all of a sudden, doesn't write or read almost ANY cd media. It says something about not being able to calibrate the power, but if I select a slow speed, like 4x, it will write, but it renders a useless cd.
DVDs work just fine, reading and writing, but CDs no go. To be sure it was a drive problem, I got a space cd-rw and tried to write something to it. CD unusable, couldn't even erase it, so I took it to another drive, which erased the disc and wrote data normally to it. And I've used thie very disc before, so it's not media incompatibility.
It happens both in Windows and Linux, so it's not an OS issue too. Your drive could have gone the other way: it can't write DVDs. Did you try another drive, or Windows recording with this drive?

It may be that that specific drive doesn't like that brand of media.
              It's been known to happen.

Yeah, DMurray, I tried it in Windows and it works fine. With a fresh Kubuntu install, it works flawless, after I do updates it goes kaput.

There were/are several threads on this subject, I revived this one because I did not want to start another.

Here is the model LG GSA-4163B DL Burner and a site to SPECS

It got to where it would only work with -R media, now after another updates it works with none. Far as the speed goes, it only burns at 4x anyway; there is a BIOS flash fix but I have NOT applied it because I did not want to break it.

Can you post pic(s) of your k3b screen, so we can see what is checked and what is not?

Hopefully these are enough. You will see another drive in the devices section, that is a CD-RW that works flawless.

                    Thanks for the look.

Tednigma, I see nothing wrong in your K3B setup, I just don't use overburn, but this is a personal taste.
When you are ready to record a disc, you have another screen with some options. You may want to check "Verify Written Data", and for File System, select "Linux/Unix + Windows" option. Finalize disk as well.

Yes Sir, that is exactly how I burn 'em.

Not a 'real' biggie, a google says I am not alone in this boggle, and it is not just one make/model being effected.

I will keep trying here and there. I've a qualified work around for now, so the ship is still afloat.

You might have some luck trying to mount it manually using ' sudo mount /dev/hda' (or whatever the drive is).
You will then need to manually unmount as well.I have one data disc that I need to do that with.
Just fyi. I'm not sure its related to your problem.

Thanks Spur. However after searching and running into brick walls, I buckled up and spend $44.00 on a new DVD-RAM drive.

Works flawless. It's the same brand and stuff, just a couple of models newer. The other drive became a DVD-RAM drive for the kids XP machine.

Anyrate, I am not gonna whine over having to spend $44.00 for a fix. Daddy needed a new drive anyway, kids always get my 'old' stuff so they are also happy when Daddy gets a new toy. 8)
