X and Gnumeric

When I run gnumeric I'm getting a bad device error

Oddly, Gnumeric still opens, however if I then try to open up a gnumeric sheet that I created previously (in this case about a week ago) then gnumeric just disappears (closes, fails?). I'm wondering primarily what the problem is, and how to fix it, but also why gnumeric can run, but will fail when opening an old gnumeric file....
