    Konqueror audiocd:/ mp3 problems

I've been happy to convert my music files to ogg files by using Konqueror.

However I would also like to be able to convert my CDs into mp3 files as well.

When you go into audiocd:/ in Konqueror, you have the choice of turning the music files into ogg or mp3. But obviously I need to install "something" in order for Konqueror to do this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction... one of those "other" repositories perhaps?

(I have http://packages.medibuntu.org/ as one of my repositories)

For converting from Audio CD to OGG, a.k.a. Ripping, you don't need to install anything. For Ripping to MP3, you need to install LAME.

      Two things...

      1. How do I install LAME? It isn't in Adept.

      2. Why would Konqueror's Audiocd function give you option of copying files into mp3 format?

        1. It's there. Look for lame or liblame0. And make sure the "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)" is enabled in Adept Manager -> Adept -> Manager Repositories.

        2. Why? The same reason why Kubuntu doesn't ship with support for MP3, AVI, WMA/WMV, Realplayer, and DVD out of the box. Copyright, patent, legal issues surrounding these formats. For more details, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You misread. I didn't say why DON'T they include it, I said why DO they include it?

Konqueror DOES give you the option of ripping your CDs into mp3 files via audiocd:/

Since it DOES give you this option, WHY include it if it can't be done via audiocd:/?

I'll get back to you on LAME.

            Re: Konqueror audiocd:/ mp3 problems

            Ok. sorry misread #2.

Answer: because audiocd:/ in Konqueror CAN rip to MP3's. BUT audiocd:/ needs the proper tools to do that, hence in needs LAME, which is an encoder. The "problem" is that Kubuntu doesn't include proprietary formats/plugins by default. KDE/Konqueror is distro-agnostic, so it doesn't know/care what your distro includes or doesn't include. That's why the MP3 option still shows up in audiocd:/, whether or not LAME is installed.

            Does that answer your question?

I've noticed the same thing in a couple of different apps. People decide to add the option, even if the utility isn't installed (and can't be installed from a default setup).

Thankyou Jucato, it now seems to be working. I ticked the multiverse option in Adept and downloaded lame.

The quality of the mp3 music files is, at the moment, not terribly good, but I'll be working through things to see what I can do.

                Cheers! Kudos to you.

The settings for ripping CD's are in System Settings -> Advanced tab -> Audio CD. Might want to take a peek there.

                    Re: Konqueror audiocd:/ mp3 problems

I'm finding the mp3's are disgusting. They all have that tinny echo that you hear sometimes. A 96kps mp3 song I am listening to sounds far worse than a 45kps ogg version of the same song. A 256kps mp3 sounds okay though.

I mean, I know that oggs do sound better, but I wouldn't have thought that they sounded that much better.

Is there some way I can use the filter settings in System Settings -> Advanced tab -> Audio CD -> mp3 encoder -> Filter settings. Would that erase the tinny echoes?
