    Konsole Kuestions

Back when I used Debian, I remember that there was an option in Konqueror under the Tools menu on the taskbar to open the Konsole, with the folder you were currently viewing as the directory to start in. This was a very useful feature that I used all the time, but Kubuntu doesn't have it. Is it possible to edit what's in the Koqueror taskbar? Does anyone know how to add this functionality to it?

And also, whenever I open Konsole, it takes a long time (about 8 seconds) before the prompt shows up. I can't execute any commands until it shows up, and it's very annoying to have to sit there and stare at the screen for those eight seconds (yeah, I know, I'm impatient). I don't recall this lag in other distros. Anyone know what's causing it, and how to fix it?

Probably not what you were after, but Yakuake is a very nice console. It drops down from the top of the screen when you press f12.

Dunno where the menu option is, but I just hit F4.

Thanks SheeEttin, I should have looked in the Configure Shortcuts option in the menu, I guess. Now that I think about it, F4 was the shortcut for that in Debian, too. It would be handy to be able to edit the menubar, but I guess I can live with F4.

Now for my second question, does anyone know what to do about that konsole-startup lag? Do you all experience it too?

          1. A right click in the current directory brings up a context menu containing i.a. Actions - Open Terminal Here 8)
          2. Provided your Konsole makes use of the Bash, reviewing the latter's configuration might help you on (I guess).

Thanks, UnicornRider, that first bit is handy.

And I'm sure the lag is caused by bash, and not Konsole itself, because when I go into a text-only virtual desktop (Control-Alternate-Function6), there's the same eight-second delay after I log in. Do you encounter this lag, yourself?

Nope - but with a completely rewritten shell configuration I'm definitely not the "benchmarker" you're looking for

Konsole opens immediately with a cursor ready to go with no lag on my machine. What's causing the lag? No clue, but I just wanted to let you know it's not a universal issue in Feisty.

                  Re: Konsole Kuestions

                  Opens almost instantly for me.

Maybe you should check your RCs. (That may take a while and prove unfruitful, though--you might just try purging and reinstalling Konsole.)

                  EDIT: I mean Bash.

                    Re: Konsole Kuestions

I think this is what you are after:

Kubuntu Breezy and Dapper come with a simplified Konqueror profile to make things more use friendly compared to default KDE.

To get back to the default KDE profiles:

                    sudo rm -r /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde-profile/default/share/apps/konqueror
                    sudo cp /usr/share/apps/konqueror/konqueror-orig.rc /usr/share/apps/konqueror/konqueror.rc

To enable Konqueror to open tar and zip files:

                    rm -r /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde-profile/default/share/mimelnk/application/

                    from http://www.kubuntu.org/faq.php#konqueror

You then get back the ability to hit f8 and have a terminal running in the bottom of your Konqueror window

                      Re: Konsole Kuestions

Okay, thanks. Restoring the default settings didn't add a konsole option to the menu (must have been a Debian-specific option), but that's alright. And it's nice to be able to be able to navigate through tar and zip files!

And SheeEttin, I'm thinking now that it's not a problem with Konsole, but rather with bash, because a text-only virtual desktop does it too.

i don't know what you're talking about as far as konsole not being the context menu. its always been there for me from dapper-gutsy....
but i just use F4 anyway since its faster...
