Menus load slowly in Compiz Fusion

Ever since installing Compiz Fusion, menus often load slowly. What could be causing this?

I've not noticed the problem with the menus on my Intel 915 laptop (xorg i810 driver) but it did take me a while to discover that I needed to set desktops and viewports to '5' before I could get the cube and expo pugins to work - still don't understand why, but that's the way it works (and with it set to 5 it shows 4?!)

General impression is that it seems a bit slicker than beryl (which I was using before) I can't seem to find the plugin I want (the one that rotates the application to the one you select) but then I only really use the compose and ring switcher plugs anyway, so no biggie.
