X restarts

This has happened twice now. The computer has been sitting idle for a period of time and I will look over and it's sitting at a login screen? I never logged out. When I do log back in, all the apps that were open when I left are running.
Where should I look to see what's been happening?

you might look in /var/log/Xorg.#.log.
