Another Kubuntu user with Adept problems

    I'll summarise:

    1. Was running Edgy.
    2. Often wondered why you can't upgrade to Fiesty via Adept.
    3. Three days ago hit the "Fetch Updates" on Adept and discovered I can upgrade to Fiesty.
    4. Process begun. I have slow internet so the program told me it would take quite a long time (1 1/2 days).
    5. After 5 hours of downloading, my ISP cut off internet access to me and thousands of others for maintenance.
    6. Next day I open Adept and discovered lots of upgrades.
    7. I begin upgrading.
    8. Adept informs me that entire upgrade would be 1001 megabytes.
    9. I make decision to download 100M or so at a time at night.
    10. Last night it didn't download anything.
    11. Then I begin to get following message : "There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages. "
    12. I tried to do it again and somehow stuffed it up. A message said "You will not be able to change your system settings in any way (install, remove or upgrade software), because another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude). Please close the other application before using this one."
    13. Came here to this site and read <a href="http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...83869.0">Adept Installer Problems</a> on thread below.
    14. I go through and do "sudo dpkg --configure -a", "sudo apt-get -f install", "sudo apt-get autoremove" and "sudo apt-get autoclean".
    15. Start Adept again.
    16. Message mentioned in point 12 above now gone.
    17. Message from point 11 above remains.

Re: Another Kubuntu user with Adept problems

As far as I know, you can't upgrade from Edgy to Fiesty using Adept without first following the recommended method. I'll copy and paste from the Kubuntu how-to guide http://kubuntu.org/announcements/7.0...se.php#upgrade for upgrading:
Users of Kubuntu 6.10 can upgrade to 7.04 over the internet by using the new Kubuntu Distribution Upgrade Tool.

Open the Adept Manager by going to KMenu -> System -> Adept Manager (Manage Packages).
In Adept -> Manage Repositories enable edgy-updates (or feisty-updates "Recommended Updates" if you are already on feisty)
If you are using the Edgy KDE 3.5.6 repository, also add
      deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-356-pre-feisty-upgrade/ edgy main
If your system is up to date, the upgrade wizard will appear or you can choose it via the Version Upgrade button. Otherwise:
      Press the Full Upgrade button.
      Press the Apply Changes button.
Once the packages are installed, exit the Adept Manager (Adept -> Quit).
      Repeat the initial steps (1-4).
Note: ANY OTHER METHOD OTHER THAN A CLEAN INSTALL WILL RESULT IN BREAKAGE
Challenges are what that keeps us from the borderline of boredom in life's journey. Linux user no. 419401 currently running Kubuntu 24.04

Re: Another Kubuntu user with Adept problems

        Princey,

        Thanks for your reply.

It was during this process of using the Kubuntu Distribution Upgrade Tool that my internet connection was cut off (see point 5).

I'm reasonably certain that my PC is now running Feisty. During the 5 hours I was using the upgrade tool, I was prompted whether I should continue downloading the upgrades or not. I chose "yes" instead of "no". The fact that I was given a choice indicates that I probably downloaded enough info for Feisty to be installed.

My splash screen has changed, as has the login graphics. Why has adept got 578 upgrades?

Even though the Upgrade tool was interrupted by my internet being cut off, there is enough evidence for me to believe that I now have Feisty. Is there some way of knowing for certain?

Re: Another Kubuntu user with Adept problems

Just tried to download and install Gwenview by Adept as an experiment. Again it performed the same as the event before Princey's comment. However I went into the terminal and did this:

          ----------------

          neil@neil-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get autoclean
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

          neil@neil-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
          Setting up libexiv2-0.12 (0.12-0ubuntu2) ...

          Setting up ttf-opensymbol (2.2.0-1ubuntu3) ...
          Updating fontconfig cache...
          "/usr/share/fonts": error scanning
          "/usr/local/share/fonts": error scanning
          "/var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d": error scanning
          dpkg: error processing ttf-opensymbol (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 3
          Setting up gwenview (1.4.1-1ubuntu1) ...

          Errors were encountered while processing:
          ttf-opensymbol
          neil@neil-desktop:~$
          ----------------
Obviously I have a problem with ttf-opensymbol. Is there some way of removing it and starting again?

BTW - Gwenview has been successfully installed.

              Have you tried that?

(Also, you can find out if you're really running Feisty by looking at /etc/issue. This tells you your system and version. (Feisty is version 7.04, as opposed to Edgy's 6.10.)

Sorry about the oversight and about the issue. Seeing SheeEttin beat me to it, I'll just reiterate what he said. Whenever Adept suggests taking an action, it's wise to do likewise. Try reconfiguring adept and see what happens. Don't hesitate to post back your findings.

you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

Yeah I did that. If you look at my original post, point no.14 you'll see that I ran that command and three others before posting here. The problem is not solved by them.

I'll point out that even though Adept keeps notifying me that There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages. every time I try to work it. The strange thing is that the packages I have downloaded seem to be there anyway. As I showed above, I downloaded and installed GWENVIEW successfully even though I got that message.

I think I have isolated the problem - it has to be ttf-opensymbol. That download is sitting there somewhere in the system and each time Adept installs other software it automatically tries to install opensymbol as well. Since this fails, it keeps popping up with the error message.

If I can get rid of ttf-opensymbol then I think things would be okay. I tried using adept to uninstall it but I was unsuccessful.

                  Any ideas?

                  /etc/issue says 7.4

For starters, you're running Feisty now, so you can lay that one to rest. Run
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get install check
                    followed by
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get check
and report back what it says.

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libdevmapper1.02: Depends: dmsetup (>= 2:1.02.08-1ubuntu2) but it is not going to be installed
udev: Depends: volumeid (= 093-0ubuntu18.0edgy2) but 108-0ubuntu4 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I then decided to do 'sudo apt-get -f install' as it suggested:

Guh... yeah, that was definitely caused by an interrupted upgrade.

Anyway, a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and you should be fine.

It seems to be working fine now. I'll try your command later, but so far everything seems fine.

Thankyou again to the wonderful people of the Kubuntu forums.
