How do I open JPEG 2000 files?

    Re: JPEG 2000

Says here you need a package called JasPer, but I looked and it is not in the (K)Ubuntu repos:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_2000

Too bad gimp doesn't support it, at least not in the default setup.

        Re: JPEG 2000

JasPer, but I looked and it is not in the (K)Ubuntu repos:
        It's hiding :
        libjasper-1.701-1
        The JasPer JPEG-2000 runtime library

        libjasper-1.701-dev
Development files for the JasPer JPEG-2000 library

        libjasper-runtime
        Programs for manipulating JPEG-2000 files

But it doesn't work : Programs die with SIGABRT 6. If you try to open jpeg 2000 pictures (konqueror (preview), ksquirrel. gwenview... ).

For Gimp there is GIMP JP2 load and save plug-in. It requires the openjpeg library. And quess what ? It doesn't work .

Quick and dirty: If you have wine - install XnView (http://perso.orange.fr/pierre.g/). There is also linux version (1.70) but it doesn't show jpeg 2000...

I tried Jasper but it didn't work.

How do I install the Open JPEG binaries?

i can open jpeg200 images with different specifications (file extensions) in kubuntu. have been able to since dapper. i'm on gutsy now and they work. its included by default in the kde file associations, so i would think the support would already be installed, but if not, installing libjasper or openjpeg should get support working.

Oops - you are right. Now jpeg200 images are opening (with ksquirrel and libjasper). Seems to work both in the dapper and feisty.

Hmm - i compiled from the source.
              Here (http://www.badongo.com/file/3391837) is the .deb.

              openjpeg.tar.gz contains:
              openjpeglib_1.2-1_i386.deb
              image_to_j2k
              j2k_to_image

image_to_j2k converts *.pnm, *.pgm, *.ppm, *.pgx, *.bmp or *.tif to the *.j2k ( *.jp2)
j2k_to_image converts from the jpeg 2000.

              In the http://www.openjpeg.org/index.php?menu=download > Compiled stuff :
              openjpeg_v1_2_linux.tar.gz

I think that you unpack this and manually put files in the right places. (/usr/lib/... ?)

Where would one find some JPEG2000 images, to play with?

                    Re: JPEG 2000

just a tip to anyone that wants to try jpeg2000... (i have since switched to using png tho)
i used to create my jpeg2000 images with photoshop cuz it (afaict) had the best ui for saving images in the format. by that, i mean the most amount of options. but to get those maximum amount of options, one must use the .JPF file extension. (there are command line utilities out there for jpeg2000 creation, like kakadu, but i preferred a ui).

here is a possible issue with that: kde does not include the .jpf extension in its list of jpeg2000 file extensions, so one must add it. do that and they work fine!

afaict, with photoshop cs3 extended edition, support for jpeg2000 has been dropped. there is no plugin available for it afaict. (i suppose one could try the one from cs2 tho).
