lemme search the ubuntu forums to see if I forgot anything
    EDIT
    also do this...
emerald --replace in a console that should fix it

Ummm, if your running beryl from the command line something is wrong,
I have a big red gem icon on my desktop & in my systray for beryl. If I switch
from beryl mgr back to KDE mgr sometimes it hoses my start bar... I just right
click the desktop & logout, then log back in.. also FYI I can't play open-GL
games or watch movies full screen with beryl mgr running, they don't like
each other,,,, I just drop back to regular KDE mgr when I do that.

I'd back up, uninstall all the beryl/emerald stuff using adept, then goto
the beryl wiki page & reinstall beryl as per their instructions. Beryl will add
its own icons when installed correctly. Leave your xorg.conf like it is & do the
emerald --replace after you get beryl reinstalled

Still sounds like you have a half-installed beryl.

ummm not sure.... you should be able to read your win partitions just fine,
I see other issues about writing to ntfs partitions in other posts... I don't
have personal experience with this because I don't have a dual-boot box...
looking thru the forums for a solution for you tho

Right click on the package and use kubuntu packagemanager to install. It took 5min from download to have it configured the way I wanted it.

                            Glad everything else works.
