linux, it isnt working for me... help maybe?

ok, i wanted to use linux...
because i dont like windows, and from what i have used of linux, i seem to like it alot...
    but.
i dont know if its my hardware, this distro, me, or something.
    but nothing seems to work.
i cant even get into adept packet manager anymore
i cant mount my drives anymore
i dont know what im doing....
i should think as someone with relatively decent knowledge of computers, i could at least use linux
A+ certifications mean nothing in the linux world
(not that they do anywhere else lol)
    so, could someone help me?
do i need a different distro of linux?
do i just need to do things differently here?

Put the beer down and be a little more specific with your problems.

We are all ready to help you, but "nothing seems to work" doesn't give us a clue as to what your problem may be.

These forums have people that will give you all sorts of information and how-to's, but we do need to know your problem.

Look forward to your next post.

    Cheers

Like lowey said. Be more specific. Like what is your hardware setup. What are you trying "to do"? What happens when you want "to do" something? Does the live cd work? Can you give us error messages, if any?

      You know stuff like that.

To that I agree ... frustration is comprehensible - but leading nowhere.

Specific questions, however, will mostly be answered "equally specific".

ok, so ive had many problems before, which are irrelevent, because i learned how to fix them...
          but i reformatted...
and now most of my applications are not here..
          includint adept packet manager
which sucks, because i dont knwo how to install stuff any other way
my hardware setup is basically this:
          http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...70216&lang=en]
          i have that computer...
and..... i only have changed a few things in it (taken out the 2nd disc drive in favor for a 2nd HDD for linux, new PSU and some RAM)
so, i think im going to RE-format with another one of my discs really quick...
that disc might have been faulty
ill post more news in a bit...
oh, some problems i never fixed:
adept packet manager was "being used"
so i couldnt do anything with it..
          my sound driver stopped working
          and then amarok randomly uninstalled
those are the ones i never got to fixing before i reformatted...

Well I don't see anything in those specs that would be a problem for Kubuntu except maybe the modem. I have a Compaq with an AMD 3200+ and similar specs and it runs great with linux.

We will just need some more info and be as specific as you can.

              i just reformatted..
and i forgot to mention i took out the modem
              lol.
so, this installation went fine, adept is working again..
and now all i want to do is get beryl
              and a dock
i heard kiba-dock is the best
but as i did not see it in adept...
i do not know how to install it.
              or ksmooth dock....
              but the same dillemma....
and with beryl, when i installed it before...
i turned it on, and my window borders all dissapeared and i had to ctrl alt bkspc
so, help with beryl (more important, being able to do the 3d multiple desktops)
              and help with a dock
              would be awesome
              thank you.

hmm, using adept... i installed kxdocker...
but idk how to use it
i mean, how to start it..
its in the usilities submenu of my kmenu
i click it.. and it sits there in my taskbar, like loading
                then eventually dissapears
                im gonna ctrl alt bkspc
maybe i need a desktop restart...

I don't use those but they are both in the experimental/trial stage.

                  http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...eisty_with_XGL

                  http://www.kiba-dock.org/index.php?o...wiki&Itemid=39

Good luck. These are pretty heavy for a first timer.

As far as window borders with beryl, easy enough to fix... you'll have to edit
your xorg.conf ( sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf ) and add this line to your
                    Section "Screen" section...

                    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

that should give you window borders when using beryl.
                    Hope this helps.

                        but no screen borders..
that may jsut be something in beryl i need to change..
                        heres a screenie...

ok, im definately sure this is something not wrong, just like a setting in beryl, because if i go to the top right of my screen (where the x and minimise and fullscreen buttons should be)
i get like a window chooser, kinda like the f11 in mac OSX
                        (i think its f11, or like f10)

Hmmm, worked for me... I'm sure you probably restarted X after editing your xorg.conf (logout alt-ctrl-backspace) but that's the only thing I can think of...
lemme search the ubuntu forums to see if I forgot anything
                          EDIT
                          also do this...
emerald --replace in a console that should fix it
