KDE 3.5.7 not showing devices on desktop

Hi,

Since i upgraded to kde 3.5.7 i cannot see any harddrive device icons on the desktop. I am not sure about USB devices. Is this a known bug? Any work around that people know?

System Settings>Desktop>Behavior>Device Icons. Check the boxes you want to appear on the Desktop.

i have this problem too!! before the upgrade, the devices showed. but only after the upgrade to KDE 3.5.7 they do not show up. i've disabled device icons, restart, enable, and restart again, and still doesn't show...

I have downgraded to 3.5.6, and my devices once more appear on the desktop.

You will need to set the line in your /etc/apt/sources.list file to:

deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-356/ edgy main

(not feisty main, as there isn't a 3.5.6 for feisty, but the edgy version works OK).

thats waaaaay overkill to go to that measure. i experienced this too in 3.5.7 (with gutsy) and have experienced it with more than one of the kde 3.5.x versions. there is a simple "workaround" for this, at least it works for me.

open a terminal program (i.e. konsole, i have the "Run Command" kicker applet on my kicker & yakuake, both very handy) and then open ksysguard and find kdesktop. right click it and go to Send Signal and then SIGQUIT. that will quit your desktop. then in your terminal program type kdesktop and that will start kdesktop again. if it works for you like it did for me, the devices will show up as they should. (i wish i knew the command to restart a program from command line...)

of course, like i said, this is just a workaround. once you reboot, they will disappear so you have to repeat the process again. also, i think after playing some games with wine it causes the devices to disappear again... just so you know.

This is not very helpful, but I've just made symlinks to the directories I want.

Found the problem...

Go into /usr/share/services/mediamanager.desktop and change

X-KDE-Kded-phase=1

to

X-KDE-Kded-phase=0

That should fix it... i am working on a patch that actually fixes the problem in the hardcode but this is just as good.

hmmm....i don't have a mediamanger desktop file in that directory...

I found it in:

/usr/share/services/kded/mediamanager.desktop

Opps made a typo, like detonate says its in /usr/share/services/kded/mediamanager.desktop
