    Mplayer complains

I've been having problems with Mplayer. I recently installed Ubuntu from CD and ever since I haven't been able to use Mplayer. The message I receive when I try to open a file is:
    Code:
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
    What have I done wrong?

    Re: Mplayer complains

In mplayer preferences select another driver from the video tab (I, for instance, use xv)
I also encountered the error when my video card drivers were not installed.

      Re: Mplayer complains

For legal reasons, software patents etc, Kubuntu cannot include by default many of the files necessary for multimedia applications. You probably need extra files, a selection being:

      libxine-extracodecs
      W32 codecs
      lidvdcss

If you haven't got these, you will struggle with video etc.

Try adding the medibuntu repositories . Instructions here:

      http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repository.php

      Hope this helps
