I know this probably sounds like a dumb question, but I can't find anything about it with the search function. How do I install programs, like firefox and the gimp? (I did download the linux version) I click on what looks like some sort of executable type thing, but it just opens up in a text document.

If you try using Adept Manager, you can easily install all sorts of software
Look here for a brief intro on installing software in Kubuntu.
It is a very different thing installing software than in a windows environment. Most software is installed from repositories using a software manager as opposed to downloading individual files from all over the place. -
