each program opened displays twice in the kicker panel. Any ideas on how to have it display only one at a time? It get pretty crowded when multitasking....

Hmm... could be caused by any number of things.
I guess you could check your settings. Right-click on the panel > Configure panel... > Taskbar.For external use only. -

Can you see if you have 2 Taskbar applets in your panel? Right-click on the panel -> Remove from Panel -> Applet.Comment
