Hi all,
I just upgraded to Feisty from Edgy (using manual upgrade with Kubuntu Feisty alternative CD). My upgrading process was very difficult, I've got to say (Upgrader always crashes out on a known Python script error regarding progress bar; repos were almost always too busy to reply; etc.)
But finally, I've managed to manually upgrade my system following the manual upgrade solution, with the help of the alternative CD.
But I'm facing a different problem now: All software run very slowly--to the extent that the whole KDE interface becomes sluggish. I'm on a 2.6 GHz CPU with 1GB RAM, on an OEM nVidia 6200 card. And it used to be smooth in Edgy before the upgrade. Whenever there is any UI activity (e.g., scrolling of song title in Amarok, loading of web page in Firefox, or even scrolling of Konsole window) will easily boost my CPU usage to 100% (Xorg taking 40-80%, and the applications with activity taking the remaining). Although the CPU usage does drop back to 1-2% after a few seconds to a minute or so, it really makes my UI experience bad--imagine you have to wait for a few seconds after each action you do to the UI!
I've search in Google, and found that there were comments regarding libx11-6 being the culprit. But after downgrading from 1.1.0 to 1.0.3 as suggested by other ppl, I don't observe any improvement at all.
Is there anything that I can do to get my smooth KDE back?
Just as a side note: I found that the default nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new drivers have been upgraded to 9631 and 9775 respectively. But none of them worked for me. (Both of my monitor simply remain black upon X start. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace cannot kill X, nor will Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 work. I had to use the RSEIUB trick to reboot my whole machine.) In the end, I had to revert back to the 9629 driver I used to use in Edgy (downloaded from nVidia directly). So far any other nVidia driver (including the 9631 and 9775 from nVidia directly) exhibit the same black-out symptom.
