Sluggish Feisty (just upgraded from Edgy)

    Hi all,

I just upgraded to Feisty from Edgy (using manual upgrade with Kubuntu Feisty alternative CD). My upgrading process was very difficult, I've got to say (Upgrader always crashes out on a known Python script error regarding progress bar; repos were almost always too busy to reply; etc.)

But finally, I've managed to manually upgrade my system following the manual upgrade solution, with the help of the alternative CD.

But I'm facing a different problem now: All software run very slowly--to the extent that the whole KDE interface becomes sluggish. I'm on a 2.6 GHz CPU with 1GB RAM, on an OEM nVidia 6200 card. And it used to be smooth in Edgy before the upgrade. Whenever there is any UI activity (e.g., scrolling of song title in Amarok, loading of web page in Firefox, or even scrolling of Konsole window) will easily boost my CPU usage to 100% (Xorg taking 40-80%, and the applications with activity taking the remaining). Although the CPU usage does drop back to 1-2% after a few seconds to a minute or so, it really makes my UI experience bad--imagine you have to wait for a few seconds after each action you do to the UI!

I've search in Google, and found that there were comments regarding libx11-6 being the culprit. But after downgrading from 1.1.0 to 1.0.3 as suggested by other ppl, I don't observe any improvement at all.

Is there anything that I can do to get my smooth KDE back?

Just as a side note: I found that the default nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new drivers have been upgraded to 9631 and 9775 respectively. But none of them worked for me. (Both of my monitor simply remain black upon X start. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace cannot kill X, nor will Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 work. I had to use the RSEIUB trick to reboot my whole machine.) In the end, I had to revert back to the 9629 driver I used to use in Edgy (downloaded from nVidia directly). So far any other nVidia driver (including the 9631 and 9775 from nVidia directly) exhibit the same black-out symptom.

If you've got the alternative CD, why not try

    gksu "sh /cdrom/cdrom_upgrade"

    ?

This works for me, after a whole night my Kubuntu 6.10 updated to Kubuntu 7.04. The only issue being that /etc/fstab not changed, and 7.04 has a kernel which take any hard disk as /dev/sdx instead of /dev/hdx

I actually tried the method you mentioned, but the script there was broken too.

But anyway, I've successfully completed the manual upgrade. The problem now is X.org's performance. I just realized that applications like Firefox or Thunderbird are the worst hit. At long as I have one instance of either running, my CPU is practically kept at 70-100% busy almost all the time (as long as there is web page loading, or animated pictures, or UI activity)!

Does anybody have more information on how to resolve this issue?

All that trouble with video drivers makes me suspicious that it's still not right. The -9755 driver supports the 6200 chip, according to Nvidia's web site. If it were me, I would make a specially named backup of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and then install and run Envy and see if it does a better job setting up the driver and xorg.conf. If not, the worst outcome is that you would have to restore your xorg.conf file and get back to where you are now.

Envy is now available in the repos.

HTH -- good luck with it!

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually tried using envy when I was still in Edgy. It didn't help me at all getting my nVidia card to work.

Nevertheless, I'll give it a try again now. Hope it can really resolve my problem. (BTW, which repo is Envy in now? I don't seem to find Envy in my Synaptic's list...)

Re: Sluggish Feisty (just upgraded from Edgy)

I found Envy in the default Feisty repo on my 64-bit Ubuntu installation. But, if you don't find it that way, you can download it and install as per instructions here:

            http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

Let us know if it helps .... :P

EDIT: Oh yeah, I did set up the Medibuntu repos on that system -- it could be in there.

Re: Sluggish Feisty (just upgraded from Edgy)

*sigh* Envy script, unfortunately, still doesn't work on my system. Both the new 9755 and the new-legacy 9631 driver installed with Envy still exhibited the exact same blank screen problem as I mentioned above. (I'm attaching the nvidia-bug-report.log here too.)

So all I can do now is to revert back to my own 9629 (with the installer downloaded from nVidia).

OTOH, the sluggish Xorg problem still persists... Any other suggestions?

                Maybe a video driver issue?

                What driver are you using?

You can find it with the following command or in the system settings.
                Code:
                $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver

                  --- snip ---
                  Driver "kbd"
                  Driver "mouse"
                  Driver "wacom"
                  Driver "wacom"
                  Driver "wacom"
                  Driver "nvidia"
                  --- snip ---

I'm using the nVidia driver. For Envy script, I tried both 9755 (latest stable) and 9631 (latest legacy). I also let Envy to generate my xorg.conf for the testing. But none helped.

Have you tried the vesa driver?

If it works, then we will be sure that this is a video card issue. If the slugginesh is still there, maybe we should look to some other place.

                    Javier.

vesa driver has always been very slow on me, even when I was in Edgy. Or maybe you meant something else?

Here's some recent Nvidia posts on Ubuntu Forums that might help:

                        http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...stalled&page=2

In particular, this one guy's problem looks a lot like yours, and he fixed it as follows:

i had the same problem and i uninstalled nvidia completely with apt-get remove --purge nvidia* then i rebooted into recovery and ran envy in text mode and let it run and it worked it didnt work in the gui for some reason lol
I do seem to recall some issues with trying to install the driver while x is running, and so if you shut down the xserver with
                        Code:
                        kdm stop
and then run your Envy script in the text terminal, you might get happy.

Thanks for the prompt. That thread did seem to describe the exact problem I'm facing with the nvidia driver--black screen and cannot switch console. However, I didn't seem to find any solution from that thread.

This didn't work for me, since I've tried this many times previously. I can say for sure that I've tried all the relevant suggestions in that thread. None worked.

Thanks again for the information! I've at least found another gang who are having this seemingly "rare" problem that I'm facing.

BTW, I've started to believe that the "sluggish Xorg" problem may not be specific to nvidia's driver. I'm now using the vesa driver (of course, I cannot use TwinView on my dual head setup now), and I can still observe heavy CPU usage by the Xorg process and applications like firefox, thunderbird (see the attachment)--There is no difference in this aspect between the vesa or nvidia driver. So could this be something more fundamental ? (X bug? Linux kernel bug?)

Sure. Can you try to boot from a different distro LiveCd (like knoppix) and check if this behaviour is still there?.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll try to download one and try it out later.

BTW, I've just managed to borrow a laptop from my friend, and I found a possibly related problem. The discovery made me change my mind about the problem again--it does seem to be more of a X.org problem now.

Remember that I mentioned above nvidia 9631 or 9755 driver hangs my system on starting (when i can only RSEIUB to reboot)? I managed to ssh in when the system hangs like that, and I found that Xorg process was taking almost 100% CPU. That is, it does seem that the Xorg process (or whatever library it depends on) is fishy.

I'm attaching the "top" output using the ssh session (when my system hangs on X start):
