    System instability

    Hello all,

I am running Kubuntu 7.04 on a Pentium D system with 1GB RAM. I have 2 HDD's installed, one for the installation with the larger one housing the /tmp, swap and /home partitions. The video card is an ATI Radeon 9550.

In the last few days I have been unable to install new software or install updates using the software updater. I have tried using the graphical method and apt-get but neither works and following is the error message I receive if using the graphical method. Any help would be appreciated. I have also noted that the software installer in Feisty has always given an error message at the start of package installation but then seems to work fine, any clues?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello again,

This is the output I get when I try to update the package list using apt-get in the command line. I do have all repositories enabled and selected and made no changes to the system to warrant this error:

all your hostnames resolve to localhost...which is kinda weird.
could you pls try the following:
      Code:
      ping -c 5 gb.archive.ubuntu.com
      Code:
      ping -c 5 [url]www.google.com[/url]
and then post the result of the following commands:
      Code:
      cat /etc/network/interfaces
      Code:
      cat /etc/hosts
      Code:
      cat /etc/resolv.conf
      Code:
      ifconfig -a
      Code:
      netstat -rn
      gnu/linux is not windoze

          Re: System instability

it's always worth making sure the basic stuff is all right.

it seems apt-get tries to access some service on port 4001...
any clues as to what it could be?
i've looked into /etc/services and have run "netstat -a", but i don't seem to have anything referring to port 4001.
you could also try to strace the apt-get command, put the output in a file and dig in there for clues...
          Code:
          sudo -i
          strace apt-get update > /tmp/xxx 2>&1
          less /tmp/xxx

I have run that command but don't know what to look for so would be more than happy to email the file to any interested parties, it is unfortunately too large for this site to allow as an attachment. Send me your email address if you want it, thanks?

            Many thanks.

              Re: System instability

              all right.
the strace command basically outputs system calls as they are executed by a program.
by reading it, it should be possible to see what the apt-get command executes...kinda step by step.
so i was hoping to find what that port 4001 refers to...
my email address is visible if you want to send the file.
              meanwhile also try this
              Code:
              grep 4001 /etc/services
              Code:
              netstat -a | grep 4001

O.k., for the sake of "public access": in the mean time, I've studied the "strace(s)" file as well as fed a copy of the sources list in question to my test system (which survived this torture - to my annoyance ...).

Therefore, at present, "wild guesses" based on gut feelings are all I am able to offer (sorry ...):

                1. Clean up: sudo apt-get clean; check up: sudo apt-get check; sudo dpkg --audit;
                2. ping all repo servers mentioned in the list to get their IPs, then replace the server names by the very same IPs.

                  >

in the strace output you emailed me, i cannot find any reference to either "localhost" or "4001".
i do see that all URIs are read all right.
but i also see that there is not a single repository hit: they all end up being ignored!

it must be something related to the network. so...
                  a) do you use a proxy to go out to the internet?
                  b) or have you installed/played about with something network related lately?

if the answer to the above is no, then could we pls see the result of the following:
                  Code:
                  cat /etc/apt/sources.list
                  Code:
                  grep 4001 /etc/services
                  Code:
                  netstat -a | grep 4001
                  also...
                  a) have you played about with your locale configuration?
                  b) have you done anything with package "abiword"? it appears in the strace as if it was broken or something...

unfortunately running out of ideas and starting to wild guess...

                  ps:
                  penguin, ha ya doing?
anything cropping up to your beautiful mind?

                    Hello again

The only localisation changes I have made was to replace American English with British English. I have not changed any of the network settings though and the set-up was working fine with these changes, at least at first :P

                    The updates are as follows:

                    cat /etc/apt/sources.list
                    # See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
                    # newer versions of the distribution.

The other two command lines didn't output anything to the screen so I have not included those in here.

I realise this is difficult and I do appreciate you two helping me like this. I am at present backing up my file to my external hard drive in case I have to reinstall the system.

                      one last go, pls:
                      Code:
                      cat /etc/environment
                      gnu/linux is not windoze

As posted before, I'd rather suspect "core" APT/DPKG of misbehaving (for the sources.list has proven valid) ... the network settings, however, I won't comment on - mine are looking widely different, simply because I'm using static IPs exclusively.

P.S.: a "beautiful mind"? Interesting though ... but, even though I may be sharing Nash's insanity, sadly, I'm barely clever enough to appreciate the brilliance of his economical theories (- I was an enconomist myself, a long time ago ...).
