    X server doesn't terminate

I've got that problem where you're left a black screen with a cursor.
Problem is, I've added TerminateServer=true to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc (in the [X-:*-Core] section), but it doesn't help.

If I switch to a terminal and switch back, the desktop and its icons come back and can be interacted with (but I don't know if I open any of them).
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

Can you explain what the 'problem' is exactly? What do you do to get the terminal (black) screen?

Well, after a little poking around, I've found that just killing "dcop-server-shut" will allow X to stop and the shutdown process to initiate. (The desktop icons didn't reappear at that time, incidentally.)
What causes the dcop server to not terminate?

(I get to the console by just hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1.)
