Memory usage problem

When I'm using the Live Cd, the kinfocenter shows that I only have about 6 Mbs of free ram(of 512). I don't have any other programs running. Why is it using so much Ram?

'cause unused stuff is kept cached in mem as long as possible just in case you need it again.
it's a way to try and minimize disk access.

If you look in KSystemGuard, you can see memory usage by type of usage. The only "real" memory usage is in blue (by default). The biggest part is yellow, this being things cached for easier access. These things will get pushed out to make room for new stuff as needed.
